Sailing

The have been rumors since Rs HD came out that the next skill will be sailing. When they first released HD they had sailing in the highscores as a skill and in a site banner at one point they had a guy with a skillcape that looked like it had a sailboat on it. Also you can now say that your smithing different kinds of cannonballs like mithril or rune. The replaced some black areas with just open water. And with the coming quest that they say has gotten more development time than recipe for disaster, they said they were putting hints throughout the website. This got me thinking about what would happen if they introduced sailing into the game. The possibility of epic sea battles and sailing to new unexplored places. It would give Runescape a whole new dynamic. Anyway tell me your thoughts on Sailing.

It has NOT been proven that sailing was EVER on the highscores. It's not that hard to take a screenie of the highscores, make a runescapy looking sailing icon and post it on a fansite claiming to have seen the sailing highscores on the Runescape highscores. If you want to say that "oh no, two people saw it!!" then prove it. 2 screen shots are NOT proof. Runescape has at least 2 million active members..what is the possiblility that only two people who knew how to take and upload screen shots saw this on the highscores..almost nil.

The runescape banner with the icon on the back..well first of all the lighting on the icon was pretty bad, probably to make it look better and I doubt the Jagex staff wanted to seperate a skill from the bunch so I think they just put on an icon that could look like anything really.
Really you have very little proof that the icon on that cape is a sailing icon. People who think that it's a magic icon have the same amount of proof pointing away from a sailing icon.

None of these things, the sailing highscores leak and the sailing cape icon prove anything. The other evidence towards a sailing skill is in the rest of the banner, the guy in the banner was standing on what looked to be a boat (or dock) and is sailing (or standing) looking out towards an island with a jungle on it. the current runescape has many islands with boats going towards them, a few of them have jungles on them and a few of them have docks pointing in the general direction of those islands.

Runescape graphics aren't that great for advertising, isn't it plausible that the character is taking a ferry to the tropical island/standing on a dock looking towards the island (with the island in the distance since you can't actually see the islands from the runescape docks themselves)

Yeah, somehow I doubt that a java engine could acutally make a skill like sailing a decent skill unless it's like a houseboat constructing skill (build a house, sail around to places at higher levels) but that's like construction so it won't happen.
If there were battles it would take the form of a catapult from castle wars meets the sinking ship of trawler which has the potential to be a terrible minigame and just doesn't have enough in it for a skill.

Yeah I do have to agree with you guys on this. Now that I think about it it doesn't seem like it could be a skill but it would be awesome to be able to have pirate battles.

and i heard that when hunter came out for a few mins you could see a summoning icon on the highscores.

It sounded dull to begin with. Once I've put thought into it they could make the game very interesting with some things you could be doing out in the open sea. It would greatly expand the world into new areas, quest, skills, and items.

I think jagex would make a minigame rather then a skill. The only skill used in sailing is Knots, how fun would that be on a computer.

I think 'sailing' is just a bunch of people trying too hard to see clues where there aren't any. There's no way a whole skill could be made from the idea of sailing. And to the highscore leak, it's not at all hard for a good graphic designer to make something look exactly like a Runescape skill icon.
