The 'economy' in runescape is one of the reasons why I quit.
I got sick and tired of Jagex adding new, long awaited or stronger/better items and make them way too hard to get for what they were.
Lets take the Dragon Hatchet, one of my favourite examples.
What DO you have to do to gt one of these?
You're going to have to go all out of your way to relleka, a pain to everyone
then you're going to have to kill a lv xxx monsters while being attacked by two others using mage, melee and ranged?
Obviously, due to how 'hard' these items are to get, the price is going to be high.
Lets see, Rune hatchet gets/got me around 4 bags of magic logs per hour, at lv85-88 woodcutting.
Dragon hatchet got me 4-5 bags per hour, usually about 10 or 12 more logs than normal.
After about a day of testing the dragon Hatchet i sold it, I've done the same with the whip, and many other items such as veracs armor, ahrims armour etc.
Why?
because the slight, tiny advantage I get for paying that amount of gp is not worth it. Its not worth spending money on prayer pots to get to dagganoth to kill one for the HATCHET (not the money).
I get annoyed at the masses of players who seem to think that the 'street price' is not controlled by jagex.
here's a newsflash for you - Yes, It Is.
Jagex affects everything in this game, if they make an item hard to get - bang! Price goes up into the millions. If jagex makes an item easy to get, uh oh, price = 1gp.
No matter what anyone says, Jagex can easily change the prices of anything in street price - how? Change the item/how to get the item.
Dragon Longsword - puts rune long to shame, my personal favourite weapon in the game. Why? because it costs 100K, can be bought from a shop, doesnt require a ridiculous amount of 'skill' to get, and wow - great advantage over someone with a rune longsword eh?
As for the economy crashing - no-one uses general stores. If they do, its prolly for a bucket.
