RuneScape Chompy Hunting Guide – By PowerPie – For RuneVillage

What is Chompy Hunting?

Chompy hunting is a minigame of sorts that becomes available after you complete the ‘Big Chompy Bird Hunting’ quest. See the quest guides section if you need a walkthrough or want to know where to find the Quest/Minigame. If you haven’t done the quest, you may not understand what comes next in this guide. This guide assumes you know how to make Ogre Arrows, and the basics of luring and hunting Chompy Birds.

Where do I go to hunt Chompies?

What is the point of Chompy Hunting?

Basically, the aim is to kill as many Chompy Birds as possible. The only rules are that you can only use an Ogre bow, Ogre arrows, and you can only hunt in the Feldip Hills. When your kill count gets high enough, you are allowed to take a Chompy Hat from Rantz the ogre. The higher your kill count, the more spectacular and colourful your hat. Chompy hats add no stat bonuses, but are untradable and therefore a symbol of your patience and ranging prowess.

If the hats don’t add stat bonuses, why bother?

1.Fun.

2.Feathers. Each chompy plucked gives you (I think) 15-30 feathers

3.Uniqueness. Very few people bother to attain the highest level hats. A high-end 5 feather hat is a sign of great determination and perseverance. And possibly obsession :\

4.Chompy hats can look great as part of a costume.

So, what do the hats look like? How many birds do I need to kill to get each one?

Okay then, how do I hunt the birds?

Well, first you need to make sure you’re properly equipped. If you’re planning on a long chompy hunting trip, I suggest you take:

As for the hunting itself, you should have found out how to do it during the quest -.-

Do how have any tips for me?

If you’ve done the ‘One Small Favour’ quest, you can use the nearby gnome glider to quickly return to the Grand Tree if you need more food or forgot something.

The Ogre bow is slower than a longbow, even on ‘rapid’ style, and the arrows are equal in power to steel. Be prepared to lose a few chompies if you’re not a particularly high level ranger. They fly away if they survive too long. Somewhere in the mid-60s you’ll be able to hit occasional 10s, which are 1-hit-kills on Chompy Birds. By 70 range, you should be getting 1 or 2 hit kills quite frequently.

Watch out for the wolves and ogres. If they attack you, you can’t shoot the chompies while you’re in combat with them, and the birds may fly away. If you have a friend with you, have them attack the Ogre or Wolf to distract it before the chompies fly away. If not, try to get into areas they can’t reach and shoot the chompies from there.

It doesn’t matter where you place your toads. Whether you get 0, 1, 2, or even 3 chompies from one set of toads is all luck. There is no ‘best spot’ to lay your bait.

After dropping your toads, start inflating new ones while waiting for the chompies to arrive for your first load.

Hunt with friends. It’s far less boring.

FAQ

Can I have more than 3 toads at a time?
No.

Can I hunt Chompies anywhere, as long as I have toads?
No. You can only hunt in the Feldip Hills. Toads cannot be banked, either. However, you can release toads anywhere, and watch them hop around for a few seconds. Try it in a crowded setting such as Castle Wars or the Duel Arena to see people’s reactions :p

Can I have more than 1 Ogre Bellows at a time?
Yes. Drop any bellows you have, get a new one from the chest in Rantz’ cave, then pick the dropped bellows up again.

I’m out of food! What do I do?
Cook and eat the chompies you have killed (10 HP per - They can only be cooked on Rantz's spitroast) or use the gnome glider to grab some food from the Grand Tree.

Is Chompy Hunting good for range exp?
No. 40 exp per chompy bird, and with that fat slow bow you’re not going to be killing them very fast, whatever range level you are.

Should I drop all my toads in a line, or drop them scattered around?
Line. It’s faster. Drop them all in one go then busy yourself inflating new ones while you wait for the birds to arrive.

What weapon would you recommend for fending off the Wolves and Ogres?
Dragon dagger. Perforate them with the special attack. or, if you have the money, an abyssal whip will make short work of them.

What's the fastest way to get Ogre Arrowheads? The level 64 wolves take a while to kill...
Try killing the wolves on White Wolf mountain, they're a lot weaker and easier to kill. The werewolves in Canifis, even in their human forms, also drop wolf bones. If you've done Priest in peril and kept your Wolfbane, I recommend killing men and women there.

Can Chompy Hunting items be traded?

The following chompy hunting items are tradable:

Ogre Arrows
Wolfbone Arrowtips

The following chompy hunting items are untradable:

Ogre Bow
Ogre Bellows
Chompy Hat (All kinds)
Bloated Toad (Also unbankable)

If I die and lose my hat, can I get a new one?
Yes. Just talk to Rantz again. (Make sure you have your Ogre bow with you.)

If I die and lose my bow, can I get a new one? What happens to my kill record?
I assume you can get a new ogre bow from Rantz, but whether or not you lose your kill record after losing your bow is not something I'm willing to risk finding out

I have an UBER-1337 five-feather Chompy hat!!!1!!1three!!!11!1!!!. What do I do now?
Wear it, fool...
