I'm writing a 10 page paper on one social issue of my choice on the country of my choice. I chose Canada.
I need a social issue that is big enough to write 10 pages on and since you all live there, I was hoping you could help me out and let me know what would be a good Canadian Issue to write about.
example of social issues being: censorship, global warning, abortion ... etc etc
Since I did list those, I'd prefer something else ... possibly something more fun ... or less usual ...

Thanks in advance ...

The bowing done by Pieree Trudeau and The Liberals (sounds like something a bad band would be named) in the late 70s and early 80s that was for the good of the country supposedly.

His Liberal government basically exploited the west by implementing the NEP. The NEP was disastrous for Alberta and its oil reserves. This lead to severe Western Alienation and spurred the birth of the Reform political party.

You could also do something on Bilingualism and Quebec separatism.

If you're wondering how these are social issues, they threatened to tear the country apart.

Separatism would be a nice topic, although I doubt you could contain the whole history of Quebec's motives for wanting separatism into 10 pages.

Why have you chosen to write a paper on Canadian social issues though? Were you told to write it from another country's perspective or just out of interest?

I like your statement about not being able to contain Quebec's motives for separatism into 10 pages ... I was worried because I've never written a paper of the demanded length, but if your statement is true, then I shouldn't have any problems.
I chose Canada because ... well I knew Shane and others from the forums were from there ... but I really don't have a reason, Canada just popped into my mind.

Hardships on the French have been apparent over the past 150 years, so there's a ton of history there. I think you should focus on some specific events that triggered the notion towards separatism. You could easily write an entire paper on one topic, such as the rebellions of 1837, although I don't think one argument would be enough to support separatism. Anyway, writing 10 pages shouldn't be a problem.

If this is your first time venturing into Canadian history I think you'll be quite surprised at how interesting (at least for me) it really is.

Thanks this all really helps! Yeah I'm hoping to be surprised.
You said you don't think one argument would be enough to support separatism. What do you think all or some of the arguments are that would support it?

Off the top of my head, no idea. It's been about a year since I took Canadian History so I'm not entirely sure of specifics. Rene Levesque definitely played a big role in recent sovereignty movements, so take a look at him. Take a look at some Canadian sites such as cbc.ca and I don't think it'd be too hard to find a book written just for just that topic.

Then again, I'm not entirely sure if you even want to write about the subject lol. There are a lot of different social issues in Canada. For my final in Canadian History I wrote a paper on the loss of identity in Aboriginal Canada, something I found very interesting. Don't write a paper just because there's a lot of information on it, write about something that actually interests you.
