If you have ZoneAlarm Internet Security, Pro, Antivirus, Anti-Spyware, or Basic Firewall installed on your computer then the Microsoft Update KB951748 which was released around July 9th (thats when my computers started having this problem.) will have changed something with the DNS and made ZoneAlarm Firewall shutdown the internet to your computer (all except for pings) when set to "High", to fix this you should download the update for your piece of software.

http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html

I hope this helps someone. It took me two days to find that I had to do this to fix the problem, I had tried everything: bypassing my hardware firewall, checking all network settings, scanning for viruses/adware/malware/spyware, even contacting my ISP ( :o ) and then my brother suggested I try disabling the software firewall, his logic was "If you can't access the internet then malicious software shouldn't be able to access you." so I took the gamble and lowered my security and I was rewarded by finding that it worked so I did a quick google search and found that I had a few options to fix this problem. I could remove the patch OR I could leave my security at "Medium" OR I could download and install the update from ZoneAlarm, I chose to download and install the update and it worked perfectly.

Has anyone else been affected by this Microsoft Patch?

A Kid asked Jesus, "How much do you love me?" and Jesus said. "This much."
And spread his arms out on the cross and died.

No. But back in 2002 I remember having these same sort of problems with ZA. Kinda figured that something like this would happen one day since firewalls get their hooks in your system pretty deep. Ever since Sp2 I just use the NAT router and XP firewall for extra protection. Not to mention that all these security programs eventually go for the most checkmarks on the website compared to the other products so they give you extra stuff you often don't want.

Whoa, my friend told me that he couldn't get on the internet for some odd reason. I'd better tell him this!

I have a pretty powerful hardware firewall/NAT router, the actual software behind the firewall is IPCop you can build your own out of a spare computer like a P2 with any amount of RAM although I suggest a minimum of 192MB, you would need 1-4 network cards depending on what you want it to do.

I trust IPCop but I still use ZA for added security since windows is targeted/naturally insecure.

It is disappointing that you can only have one "active" scanner running at any one time, unless you like to see the BSoD.
