Hi all. I need a few more levels (6) to finish the lasts quests for my quest cape, so I decided to buckle down and cut each tree, just to see what was the fastest. Here is what I found:

(Edited to reflect times per minute for easier comparison)
Typexp/minutegp per minute
Logs330264
Oak776310
Willow787210
Teak950938
Maple1221266
Hollow736139
Mahogany790894
Arctic Pine2061690
Eucalyptus6371183
Yews451916

(Data From Mike copied from below for easy comparison)

typetime to cut 27WC OnlyWC xp with FMFM xp with WC
oak1.33minutes759xp/min506xp/min810xp/min
willow2.5minutes729xp/min576xp/min767xp/min
maple4minutes675xp/min579xp/min781xp/min
yew9minutes525xp/min489xp/min566xp/min
magic20minutes338xp/min327xp/min397xp/min

All trees were cut and timed for 5 trips, I cut out the fastest and slowest and took the average of the last three, and divided that per log. Prices are from the GE median price. Banking time was not taken into account here, and burning takes about 120 seconds per inventory except for teaks and mahog, which were about 4 minutes because you have such a small area.

Banking/cutting mahogany and teaks also costs about 82.22gp per log (100 trading sticks entrance fee, and 10 per bank transfer). That figure is not reflected in the gp/minute figure here, but since teaks are 86gp in GE, that is a profit of only 5.78gp per log, making it easily the worst log at 1.05gp/second and the mahogany at 6.45gp/second.

It looks fairly clear that the logs high on one side are low on the other. Maples at 20.35xp/sec and only 4.44gp/sec, while at the opposite edge you have Arctic Pines at 3.43xp/sec and 28.17gp/sec. The rest fall in the middle. I had for the longest time though teaks were by far the fastest, and although they are, the ge has ruined the price so the are pretty much not worth cutting any more.

Anyone have anything to add? Also, the more data the better, if you want to time a few inventories, please do so and post the results. From clicking the tree to the last log in invent (doesn't matter though if it is full or not, just list the # of logs so I can divide by that to get the per log figures). All trees were with me as the only cutter, and done with a rune axe.

That's a nice chart, it's similar to my results from a year ago.

Here are my results for comparison. I did them late at night about a year ago, there was no one else at the trees and I cut with a rune axe. Like you, I did 5 trials of each. I did not test as many types of trees as you though.

The WC only column does not take banking into account, it is just the xp rate of the tree in an area where there are lots of them. Due to the lack of banks near oaks, oaks are nowhere near that amount actually. From these results, willows are the fastest if you want to bank because banking takes less time than lighting the logs on fire and the wc xp made in that extra time makes up for the 3 extra xp maples gain while firemaking.

typetime to cut 27WC OnlyWC xp with FMFM xp with WC
oak1.33minutes759xp/min506xp/min810xp/min
willow2.5minutes729xp/min576xp/min767xp/min
maple4minutes675xp/min579xp/min781xp/min
yew9minutes525xp/min489xp/min566xp/min
magic20minutes338xp/min327xp/min397xp/min

Another test I did was to compare the rune axe against the dragon axe. I did 10 loads of willows with each at barbarian assault and took the total time including using the drop off box to put them in the bank. The xp rates from these results are higher because I am about 10 levels higher than my last test, and I was wearing full lumberjack outfit.

Dragon Axe - 851xp/min
Rune Axe - 814xp/min

Interesting chart, but that is only for you and a few people. I've noticed, as a 99 woodcutter, that raising more experience allows me to cut magic logs faster, so this is only for your level/experience range.

Mike - Thanks for the detailed reply. Exactly what I was hoping for. I might go out and time the WC + burning times again now. I don't like WC and was just looking for the fastest way to 72 so I can get my quest cape back, but I do like FM, so I might have to think about oaks.

Kirby - Thanks for posting, but that is what everyone seems to think. As you go up in level you do cut logs faster, that is kind of a given. If you could go out and make a few time trials now... that would be great.

Creepy. Nice on the 99 there. I saw yoru post and it didn't agree with my data, so I went out and re-did the trials. Turns out you were right. Here is my new data:

Treexp per min
Willows804
Maples672

I did my cutting at level 70 with a d axe near Barbarian Assault. Great WC training spot there.

Nice comparison charts !
Make a 'gp per minute' based on the grand exchange prices...

Dream mentor has a requirement of 85 combat.

On top of that, I really don't think that you'll be able to do Desert Treasure at level 65... Or ME2, unless you spend about 150k on prayer pots. Maybe wont even be able to be the end of RFD

Desert Treasure isn't actually that hard if you have someone drop food for you/help you...
My friend did dt at lvl 78 and many pures have done it at lower levels.
But ya you need 85 combat for the quest cape.

ON TOPIC: Nice chart but there's something that I don't understand, in your original post it says that maples are 1221 xp/min and willows are 787 xp/min. I think that's wrong, maples have always seemed slower than willows.
If its a typo or something please fix it. :)
