I disagree there. Children at a certain age need to be physically punished if they have ever done something wrong. Of course if the offense is minor then there really isn't any need. However, if he/she is rude to his/her parents for example... Then they need to be slapped.
Explaining to them what is right and wrong might give them the idea that they're basically off the hook and might do it again. Whereas if you slap the child on the behind or the back of the legs, he/she will think twice about mis-behaving again.
Yes, beating children is an old tradition. However, I believe, it was created because people didn't want to or just couldn't afford to spend too much time talking to their children. Beating is a quick solution which does not require any kind of mental effort. While, it is obviously one of the ways to have it done, it is not the only one and it is not the best one either. In modern world parents really have a choice: they can do what their parents did to them or they can decide to really spend time with their children. It is a personal choice, of course, but more and more parents choose not to beat their children now.
