You Brits and your GCSEs. It would be great if getting into college was easy as that in America. =$
What do you need to get into college in America?
Most American students who are looking to attend uni take a either the ACT or SAT (not sure what the acronyms stand for). The ACT is a more achievement-based exam, while the SAT offers more abstract questions. Both tests record mathematical and writing/reading skills. Depending on how high your score is, your chances of getting into uni increase.
I glanced at an SAT study booklet while in a bookstore in the US and it looked pretty easy.

In Germany, we (gymnasium students) had to take our
abitur. It's the final exam to beat all final exams. It's measured on a scale of 100-840, but I think that the passing level was 280 or something. But, yeah, it's almost required if you're a German who wants to attend university.
But anyway, on topic, congrats on your results!
