Is there a god? <dramatic music>

Thanks for that post Ryan, nice to see another side slightly away from the argument.

From what I can see, atheists easily have reasons to live. Many of them being scientists, of course, would find reason in helping others - if not for money, where it does come into living life to the full.

I know lots of people who have connections with my Dad who don't believe in a God as a single entity, but devote their lives to helping others beside their day job. For that, I wouldn't care about their religious views, but their modesty is incredible and it's nearly impossible to get them to talk about it. For that, I respect them more than anyone else, whether "anyone else" is "believer" or "non-believer".

As much as I would like to say more, at the moment I'm restricted from it internationally.

Wrong. I was channel surfing in the early hours of the morning and I flicked onto religious channel (unintentionally), and a woman in her 30s was talking about how she never used to believe in god, but now has faith because her mother's cancer vanished. Anyway, I was disgusted to say the least.

Believers can change the beliefs of non-believers outside of this thread. When I was talking about groups I meant as in the two sides of this arguement. I can't change your view and you can't chnage mine. But irl I could change someone's view who doesn't believe and you could change someone's view who does believe. Though it would be hard for either of us to change the view in either direction.

Has you question about God's existence been answered?

Might as well bring this one up.

If god truly exists, why do disasters, natural or man-made, occur? Shouldn't god be powerful enough to stop them from happening? God is after all, all-seeing. Even fictional saturday morning cartoon superheroes can save people or cities from disaster, why can't God? God doesn't really exist, does he?

There are several ways to answer that question, each one different depending on your philosophy. Personally, I would say that god is powerful, but does not meddle in activities on earth. Also, I believe that bad things happen as a balance of good and evil. It's hard to apply human characteristics god and say that he's "compassionate" or that he "cares" about humans. I find god being as keen to create people as he is to destroy them. Does that make me quiver in my boots though? Not really. I think god wants people to just live their lives for the time they have on earth.

Probably so. I know you're trying to play down my opinion by comparing it to a computer game, but yes. I believe that for the most part, god has no reason to interact with people for their every waking moment.

It was the simplest explanation.

However from what I have seen he doesn't interact at all.

In my opinion, natural disasters are created by God to show people that they can't control everything, and that there is indeed a power greater than themselves. Most people just miss this idea and use natural disasters as their reason for disbelief. 'Why didn't God stop this from happening? He musn't exist because our lives aren't perfect'
