You probably cant hold those programs on your site, but you could write about them and link to them etc.

Guest books are a rubbish idea, especially if you have forums. Forums and a blog with open comments are sufficient. Hit counters are so nineties as well.

Make a kind of articles system of some sort. Have a main page, then a blog for yourself, a section for articles, forums, maybe a chatroom of some sort. Get some other writers in to make articles as well - having more than one person make a website is often better than just the one.

GIMP is on my list in real life, but I use Photoshop so I didn't want to add it to my site. I guess I will add it though.

Matthew, I know I can't hold the programs on my site. I was going to hyperlink the title to the download page, and have a small blurb under it. I want to have the hit counter to see if my site is popular or not. Also, I will be hiring a crew when my site gets up and running.

Having site statistics of some sort are a good thing - it lets you see how many hits and things you've had, which is useful. But showing off how many (or how few) visitors your site has had looks a bit terrible usually. Name a popular site that uses a hits counter.

eBay.

Go to a page where someone is selling something, and scroll down.

You'll most likely always find a counter.

Those counters have a purpose. If you don't need a counter, you shouldn't have one - they're a bit out of fashion... Though they were fun to use when I was between the ages of 8 and 10. XD
Matthew knows his stuff.

Yeah I like the stat counters because they don't take up space and look stupid.
