Quote: Chapter One - One step towards Immortality. Within a dense, misty forest, a middle aged man begins his search for an answer, buried within the tomb of an ancient king. He takes a moment to realise his surroundings. The tomb is surrounded by the typical pillars found in Phoenician Architecture, and a large stairway lay undisturbed in front of him. He took a step forward, and made his way up the stairs towards the large stone door, covered in runic symbols, marking the entrance to the tomb of the fabled King Endymion.
Lady Theola Arreth and her son, Fiore, walked together down a Carthaginian alleyway towards the Senate's School. It would be Fiore’s first day in education, so he was excited, but also nervous. He was one of twelve new students, and having being brought up in conditions which neither he, nor his mother could control; he had not yet made a friend. Fiore belonged to a wealthy family and was fortunate enough to be accepted into the Senate’s School. This was a great honour, he would not be fighting with swords or arrows; he would be fighting with magic. Just like his father and his grandfather, he would fight for his country when he was old enough. Though, Fiore was the first in his family to be blessed with the Gods’ magic. His family were renowned for being great soldiers and he knew what he was expected to amount to. Sadly, even though Fiore belonged to a prestige bloodline, his Father was away on military business for months at a time, and his Mother had to work to make ends meet.
The pair continued walking towards the tall building up ahead, the Senate’s School of Elements. It was easily identified by the seven towers and the large dome, housing the main hall. Fiore’s mother, Theola, was approached by a shady tradesman, holding a shining blue gem. "A woman with beauty such as yourself will know exactly what this is, wouldn't she?" The Man's voice was smooth, deep and somewhat intimidating. Fiore's Mother spoke for the first time on the pair's journey. "It’s an energy shard which increases the ability to run. Am I correct?" "Indeed you are Miss! Then you will obviously know of its worth, and its capabilities?" Fiore's Mother chuckled. "I am well aware that shards are useless unless forged into the proper equipment, such as a Ring or a Sword's Hilt. You are wasting my time." With that, the Mother and her Son continued to walk towards the large building ahead, the trader turned to another attractive woman on the streets and his scowl quickly disappeared.
After a few more minutes of walking, the mother and son came to the School's doors. She knelt down to her Son's level, and spoke softly, unlike how she spoke with the tradesman. "Fiore, the Senate believe you hold great potential, and that you will help Carthage defend itself against the Romans some day. I want you to listen carefully to your Mentors, and try your best to please them." Fiore nodded. "Always remember this Fiore; I will love you for who you are, no matter the results of The Senate's Teachings. You are my son and you should never be afraid of who you are. I believe that man over there is named Rhaet; he is a member of the Senate so you should go to him now. Have a nice day my dear."
Fiore’s Mother waved and soon walked off as he was beckoned into the School of Elements, by the man dressed in thick green robes. The man stood approximately 5 feet and 10 inches tall, had long brown hair and a very intimidating pair of emerald green eyes. Fiore had been nervous all morning, but staring into those eyes worsened the feeling. As the two walked through the main corridor of the building, the man introduced himself; ”Good Morning Fiore, my name is Rhaet. I’ll be your tutor for this week.” Rhaet’s voice was peaceful and after hearing it Fiore soon forgot about being nervous. “The Senate have decided together that we will be teaching you the Magic of Nature to begin with. It’s a bit more complicated than Wind Magic but after careful analysis we figured it would best suit your personality. But to begin with, the Senate will first have to alter your spiritual code to enhance your ability to create magical energy. All humans are born with this power; however, only those born with a slightly above average ability are entered into this School, where they will be taught how to use their talents. Do you understand?” Fiore looked up at Rhaet, “Yes Sir, my Father has told me all about what will be happening today.” “Ah yes, your Father is one of Hannibal’s top men. I am glad I won’t have to explain what will be happening to you shortly, a lot of our students got scared when I told them.” ”I have already braced myself, Sir.”
Rhaet guided Fiore to the end of the main corridor, past many paintings of famous people in Carthaginian history such as Queen Dido, and opened the large stone door which led into a cylindrical room. In this room sat the other eight senate members around a table in the shape of an arc. In the centre of this room was a square plate of marble with various symbols on it, it shined a dim white and Fiore recognised this as a very important feature of the room he was standing in. He had been in the room for no longer than thirty seconds before Rhaet introduced him to the other eight; ”This is Fiore Arreth, Lady Theola’s Son. I have high expectations from this one. Fiore, please stand on the white tile.” “Introduce us to him, Rhaet.” A female in a white dress smiled as Fiore walked forward. ”Yes, Fiore, the woman dressed in white is called Hio, she specializes in healing and purifying, otherwise known as Light Magic, she tends to our armies after they have fought and is a very important figure in this land. The man beside her in blue is Aqer, who has the ability to create water, and uses magic parallel to that element. He controls most of the Carthaginian Navy, and is responsible for a lot of the wealth that brings us. Next is Teros who’s in the grey robes; He is a Mage of Wind, and is primarily in charge of defences along with myself. Next to Teros is Araloken, dressed in purple. Araloken has a very complicated and powerful ability which enables the use of Fear Magic, the first of three mind altering powers which are used only in offensive magic and interrogations. Next to Araloken is Unin, in dark blue robes. Unin controls telekinesis, the second mind altering power, which we refer to as Mind Magic, it’s used in finding out information rather than in offensive situations but there have been a few instances where it has been needed. Unin also leads the senate and has the power to overrule any decision, break ties in votes and performs the alterations to spiritual code. Next to Unin is Nekolara, in Pink. Despite the colour of her dress, she controls one of the most menacing abilities known at this time. Nekolara has the can induce tremendous pain into living creatures at will, and for that reason she leads the Elite Force of the Mage Army. Nekolara is Araloken’s sister. Next to Nekolara is where I sit, and next to that place is Magmos, who dresses in crimson robes. Magmos controls the element of Fire, and uses his powers to craft bronze and iron weaponry or armour for our troops, he is also regularly seen in battle. Finally but not least by far, is Vaxilm, dressed in black. He controls power over shadows and darkness, and is specialized in many offensive/defensive spells like decaying the enemy’s bones to slow them down.” Rhaet took a deep breath after his speech, and made his way to his chair.
Unin stood up from where he was sat, and spoke to Fiore, who was still standing on the white tile in the centre; ”Fiore, even though Rhaet has just said some flattering things about all of us, we, like all humans have our limits and weaknesses. We are not all-powerful. We are very strong as a group, which is why we rule Carthage, but we will eventually die and to protect the well-being of this land I enrol students to learn our magic. During your time here I expect you to learn how to work together with the other twelve students and to discover and realise your limitations and to never abuse the powers we will give to you. Will you honour my request?” ”Sir, I will Sir,” Fiore said with respect. ”You have a question to ask me, Fiore?” ”Umm, yes Sir. My mother was approached by a man this morning, and I think he offered her a shard. What are shards?” “A tradesman should not have a shard.” Nekolara stood up. “I will go and see why he has one.” ”Very well, Nekolara.” Unin explained to Fiore, while Nekolara left the building, “Shards are magical gems which the Senate School Students produce for our armies. They increase our troops abilities depending on which gem has been enhanced. There will be a Shards Class tomorrow which will introduce you to the profession. Now, if you will ready yourself, I am about to perform the Alteration.”
Unin stepped forward and began to recite the spell of Alteration. Fiore started to feel very dizzy, as if he were made out of liquid, struggling against gravity to maintain his form. Within seconds, that feeling was interrupted by a sharp jolt of pain in the back of his neck. That pain began to slowly spread down the spine, and by the time it had reached the bottom, it had strangely became somewhat comforting, “How are you feeling Fiore? Has it stopped hurting you yet?” Unin asked Fiore. “I… I can’t explain this feeling.” “That is good; very good in fact. Now I want you to close your eyes, and count to twenty. After you are done counting, I want you to tell me the first word or words that come into your head.” Fiore closed his eyes and counted slowly to twenty, just as Unin said. As he was doing this, the feeling in his spine became gradually warmer, and more comforting as he came closer to his target. He began to imagine a large jungle, covered in frosty grass and strange looking plants. In the distance he could see a sort of tower hidden in the vines and shrubbery. But before he could imagine any more, Fiore opened his eyes, he had reached the number twenty, and immediately spoke the first word that came to his lips; “The source.” “How very interesting, “The source” has been said once before.” Unin appeared to be slightly confused at Fiore’s words of choice, but nevertheless, spoke again quite swiftly. “I can say that the Alteration was definitely a success, you may have ten minutes to rest, as the alteration is a very draining process for young people. After that though, you will be taken by Rhaet to experiment with your newfound abilities. I however, have to attend to something elsewhere.” “Senate members, I have some news.” Nekolara had returned from her previous errand. “The tradesman who was selling Shards has been confirmed, he is currently in the interrogation room and I require Araloken to help with extracting information.” Unin made his way to the door at the back of the room. “I see. I regret that I am unable to offer my help right now. There are matters elsewhere I must take care of. I believe you know what I am talking about. When I am done there, I shall come and see if you need any help with the tradesman. I believe this meeting is over.”
As the middle aged man approached the tomb’s door, he heard a whisper; “There will be a higher price to pay this time, Unin.”
