Yeah, I need major help.

I have entered all the coding in dreamweaver and saved it as "index.html". When I open it in firefox/internet the url shows, file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Jaden/My%20Documents/My%20Webs/myweb3/index.htm

As you can see the url starts as file://. This is the problem. I can't do anything with this url link. No one except on my computer can view the site. I need to know how to change the file:// to http:// so I can get some free web hosting, and so others can view it from anywhere.

Help is incredibly appeciated. Thanks.

  1. Firefox does not equal Internet
  2. Files on your computer are local, they use the file:// protocol. Files on web servers (computers connected to other computers) are on a network, which we call the Internet. Files are those servers use the http:// protocol when someone on the network wants to access it.
  3. Therefore, you can't just "change" the protocol to "get some free hosting".
  4. Find a company that provides web hosting. You'll probably need a domain too.
  5. After you have your own space, then you can upload the files to the server and access via the domain.
  6. Finding a web hosting service should be an easy task. Just Google it up. However, there are thousands of them, so take your time and find the right one.

I've already made an account on 3 different web hostings. In order to complete the process I need to enter an existing domain or subdomain to get the web host. I can't because file:///... isn't a subdomain or a domain. I even tried using a FTP Client and that didn't help much. I can remember at school I made a website that was fully functional and could be viewed anywhere. Is that because they have there own server? I am really bummed about this. I also have a copy of the codes on MS Frontpage. I wonder if there is a way to upload your website file onto the internet on there..? or webhosting on there..?

Sorry, forgot to explain to you what domains and subdomains are.
Domains are for identifying web servers, for example: rsbandb.com is a domain. Subdomains add to the existing domains, for example: shane.rsbandb.com is a subdomain.

file:// is a protocol. It has nothing to do with domains.

To get a domain there are several registrars. I recommend Namecheap or GoDaddy.

At your school, the web pages you created could be viewed everywhere probably because it's on your school's web server.

As for FTP client, ftp is another protocol for file transferring. Commonly used to upload files to web servers. You will need a FTP account first on the web server to use it.
