I've got a tale and a question for you all. This is the story of Big Mog:
I am part of the miniclip generation. Yep, one of the pack that 'ruined runescape'. I had heard about the game a while before from a friend who was rambling about a game where you could catch and cook fish. Once I saw it on miniclip, I decided to register. Bigmog0 was born.
From the character design, to the unique graphics, I LOVED IT. I thoroughly enjoyed tutorial island, and learning about new skills. After completing the island, I found myself in a town named lumbridge. I saw a level-30 character walk past and thought he was godly. I saw a person hit a 3 and thought it was godly. It was my best time in runescape. The period of exploration.
I ventured north along a desert fence, and ended up in varrock. Not knowing about the wilderness, I continued on my journey north. A fellow level-3 ran up to me and began to attack. I had all my items on me. I begged with him to stop attacking, running around like a madman trying to get away from him. Alas, my efforts were in vain. Bigmog0 was slain.
When I arrived back in lumbridge, I had lost my tinderbox. Thinking I could never get another, I closed the window and headed back to msn, thinking about how much fun I had before it was 'ruined'.
At school the next day, I told my friends about the game. They decided to join, and I made another character (still thinking a tinderbox was irreplacable). Nowdays, I am thankful for this, as I luckily tried Big_Mog, and found it free. Now I had friends to explore with, a new tinderbox, and even a small sense of competition as we raced to 5 attack. An even better time set in.
Seeing a level-8 hit a 3 with a steel b-axe, I set my first Runescape goal. I wanted one, I wanted it bad. Set myself up at the goblins across the bridge, and slayed them on my way to 650gp. My proudest achievement yet, walking around with something that I had earnt on my own.
My training continued. Another godly level-20 traded with me, and gave me an air talisman. Thinking this was a rare item, I thanked him profusely, then ran to the general store to get my grubby mitts on some cash. It was valued at 1gp. So, i decided to keep it. After slaying a goblin, I buried his bones. A level-14 zombie appeared, and started hacking into me. Thinking this was tied to the talisman, I ran away, and warned all my friends never to bury bones with a talisman.
My combat training went on for a week or so. I killed goblins for money, and when I first held 1k, I felt like a king. The world was my oyster. Back then, mith was godly to me, un-attainable. I purchased full iron, and felt indestructable. I can still remember the sense of pride as I walked into goblin village with my new armour.
Back then, my non-combat skills were pathetic. It was all I did. thankfully, a friend had become interested in smithing and mining, antoher in fishing, and we were always there to help each other out. Setting myself the goal of 50-50-50 combat stats, I vowed not to leave goblin village. I found myself surpassing my friends in combat, and yet much poorer.
We went everywhere together. We explored the wilderness, found the cosmic rune spawn at the top left hand corner and collected over 300 each before leaving. I still have those runes today. I somehow found myself with full mith, which I soon lost after challenging a random player with my same combat level and same armour. He used strength potions, and had lobsters for food. I was poor again.
Those were the days. everything was new, challenging and exciting. I still enjoy Runescape thoroughly, but for different reasons. I fish for my money, and recently bought 100k iron arrows to get my range to 85+. I play to set goals, achieve them, and set more goals. After I saw rune(t) armour for the first time, I knew I would get it one day. After fishing lobsters for a week straight, I bought it. The sense of achievement was great.
My question to you is this. Why do you play Runescape? Have your reasons changed from the early days? Do you enjoy it as much?
My answer to the last question would be yes, I enjoy it as much, but for different reasons. I used to play for the discovery, now I play for the achievements, and in the future, pking. Thankyou for your time.
