Guide to Making Battlestaves
Author: Addiv (11/19/08)

This guide will cover the making Air and Earth Battlestaves for profit by detailing the steps in the process and looking at what affects profit. We won’t cover how to make Water or Fire Battlestaves because of the inconvenient location of the obelisks needed to charge the orbs. I recommend sticking with Earth and Air Battlestaves. Once we've covered the steps involved, I'll briefly show you what you can expect for profit and experience and wrap it up with some suggestions.

The process:
  • Buy Battlestaves
  • Make Orbs
  • Make Runes
  • Charge Orbs
  • Attach Orbs
  • High Alchemy

Buy Battlestaves
Since we can’t yet make battlestaves ourselves, we have to buy them. There are four buying sources:

  1. The Staff Shop in Varrock.
Talk to Zaff and he’ll sell you 8 battlestaves every day. You can increase this number by completing the Varrock Achievement Diary tasks. You’ll be able to buy 16 once you’ve completed the Easy Tasks, 32 after the Medium Tasks and 64 after the Hard Tasks. You need to be wearing the Varrock Armor when you speak to Zaff in order to get the extra staves. Battlestaves will cost you 7000 gp each and this is the lowest price you’ll find. You should always buy as much as you can here every day.
  2. Grand Exchange.
You can buy the battlestaves from GE, however, you’ll reach a limit of 600 per day. You’ll get them in groups of 100 every four hours. Battlestaves will cost you around 8300 gp each.
  3. Friends.
Ask your friends to buy them for you and then thank them profusely for keeping you in business. This is one way around the 600/day limit and the cost is the same as option 2.
  4. Baba Yaga’s Magic Shop on Moonclan Island.
Baba Yaga has a small supply of battlestaves that slowly restocks up to a maximum of 20. To get staves in any useful quantity you'll need to do some world hopping. Fortunately there isn't a lot of demand on these so you should find them available on most worlds. This is a last resort because of its location. Battlestaves from Baba Yaga will cost you 8334 gp each.

Make Orbs
Your goal here is to convert molten glass into unpowered orbs. Molten glass is around 370 gp each so if you really wanted to increase your profits, you can gather the seaweed and sand yourself and gain a little more Crafting experience in the process. You may also choose to buy the molten glass and save yourself a lot of time since gather supplies is very slow.

  • Do it all.
You can find seaweed on Entrana or along many beaches but the best place I’ve found is to use the Fairy Ring code DKS and run to the beach near there. You’ll find 9 seaweed respawns and players killing rock crab there sometimes give or sell you the noted seaweed they pick up from drops. Bank in Zanaris and return for more. You’ll need to burn the seaweed on a range to turn it into soda ash. Sand can also be found on Entrana and in Yanille near the home portal there. The best source of sand is doing the Hand in the Sand quest. Once complete, Bert in Yanille will put 80 buckets of sand in your bank each day you talk to him.
  • Buy molten glass.
If you plan to buy, don’t skip this step and buy charged orbs. That will completely destroy any profits you might have made and you’ll be missing out on the best Crafting and Magic experience in the making of battlestaves. You shouldn’t have too much trouble buy molten glass but you should put a buy bid in at least a day before you run out of orbs.

Now that you have the molten glass, it’s a simple matter of using a glassblowers pipe to make unpowered orbs. You’ll need one for each battlestaff you plan to make but you won’t be able to attach it until it have been charged at one of the four element obelisks.
XP: 20 Crafting (if making molten glass) plus 52.5 Crafting per orb made

Make Runes
You can buy all your runes instead of making them but you’ll miss out on a chance to gain some runecrafting experience. For each battlestaff, you’ll need three Cosmic runes and one Nature rune. This is a huge way to save money, especially if you’re able to make double Cosmics or Natures.
XP: 8 Runecrafting per Cosmic and 9 Runecrafting per Nature

Charge Orbs
Charging orbs requires an air staff, 27 unpowered orbs, and 81 Cosmics. You’ll be running past Black Demons so you should wear your best dragonhide armor and keep as light as possible. Boots of Lightness, Spottier Cape, and Penance Gloves would help if you have them. This is also a good place to use Bull Ants or Spirit Terrorbirds. They can both carry addition orbs to the obelisk as well as provide you with run energy. You’ll also want to have a Glory Amulet and a Duel Ring for that time you forget to recharge your Glory. The more Glories you have, the easier this will be. As you start to see some profits from making the battlestaves, I’d suggest investing in some additional Glories to keep you going.

  • Start at Edgeville Bank. Equip an air staff and load up on orbs and Cosmics. If you have a beast of burden, load them up as well.
  • Enter the Edgeville Dungeon and head north until you reach the gate that takes you into the Wilderness part of the dungeon. Run north to the red spiders and then West to the room with the Black Demons. If you’re charging Earth orbs, you can reach the Earth Obelisk by running south. The Air Obelisk is north and up the ladder.
  • To charge the orbs, click on an orb in your inventory and then on the Obelisk. While the orbs are charging, keep a lookout for unfriendly creatures. The Earth Obelisk is near demons and spiders while the air obelisk is routinely patrolled by revenants. A high combat level will keep the spiders and almost all of the revenants from attacking you but this is the wilderness so don’t take anything you aren’t willing to lose.
  • Use your Glory to teleport back to Edgeville and repeat the process.
XP: 70 Magic (Earth) or 76 Magic (Air)

Attach Orbs
Really simple. Note that you should click on the charged orb and use it on the battlestaff. If you click on the battlestaff it’ll equip itself.
XP: 137.5 Crafting

High Alchemy
All battlestaves high-alch for 9300 gp. You can sell them on GE but they don't sell quickly. You also have the option of turning them into Mystic Air/Earth Battlestaves but this is expensive and not profitable.
XP: 65 Magic

Where's the profit?
From the table below, the only way to loose money is to buy everything. Making a single Air Battlestaff will give you at least 190 Crafting and 141 Magic experience.
NOTE: All battlestaffs bought from Zaff's Staff Shop add an additional 1300 gp profit per battlestaff to the numbers listed here

Suggestions
  • If you don't have much money, buy what you can and go through the entire process. When you are done you should have enough money to buy a little more each time through. Your goal should be to go to sleep with an order for 600 battlestaffs already in GE so you're ready for the next day.
  • The big profit is in staves bought from Zaff's Staff Shop. To maximize profits, you should spend as much time as you can on completing the Varrock Achievement Diary. Even after you are done making battlestaves, you can buy them from Zaff and make the 20 second run to GE and sell each one for around 1300 profit. It doesn't get much easier than that!
  • Other than making your own molten glass, charging orbs is the longest task in the process. Do whatever you can to minimize the time you spend doing this by using Bull Ants, Spirit Terrorbirds or energy pots to keep you moving.
  • Buy enough glories to fill your inventory and wear one. When you go to recharge them you can get it all done in a single trip. Between making runes and charging orbs, you're going to use them quite a lot.
  • I've been attacked by large revenants while charging orbs but only twice in all the trips I made to the air obelisk. They teleblock you and poison you but are easy to get away from by going down the ladder. Most of the revenants will be low level and won't attack but keep an eye on what comes up the ladder
