With the capitulation of everyone behind HD-DVD it was thought that we'd see Blu-Ray become the new universal format for movies on optical media. Blu-Ray hasn't become ubiquitous like DVD did. I personally see the problem to do with the costs of the media and the DRM restrictions on it. I do wish that Blu-Ray would universally become the new DVD style format.

The question that I have for everyone, is Blu-Ray needed? Or can a digital HD format do exactly what it can do?

My answer: It depends. If the HD content is compression artifact free, then it would suffice. However, if there are compression artifacts or it's something that I am truly invested in, ie. Star Trek I would like the Blu-Ray version.

I already have a number of Blu-ray DVDs but I rarely buy them because of the difference in price between Blu-ray and "regular." I do prefer watching on Blu-ray because it is just so awesome. Plus, the DVDs always come with a digital copy so I can put it on my computer :D

Out of all the available formats today, I think Blu-ray should be the one everyone should eventually be using (gtfo 3D).

Just a sidenote: I saw Tron: Legacy DVD for sale a week or two ago. The Blu-ray version came with: 3D Blu-ray, 2D Blu-ray, regular 2D, Special Features, and Digital Copy. Who needs all that? >_> And I honestly don't know a single person who has a 3D TV in their home. I just want 2D Blu-ray and digital copy but they don't sell just those two together. :(

Speaking of Star Trek, my brother bought it on Blu-ray from a Blockbuster that was closing down near his college XD

Can't wait for all 6 episodes of Star Wars to come out on Blu Ray :D

if i had a high def TV, and duel surround sound, and 5000 bucks to make my own man cave. yeah i would go with blue ray. but since i do not have any of that, i am going to stay with DVDs. although i really want to replace my TV in the living room when i have enough money.

I think that disk are not going to be sold within the next 3 years. Everything is becoming digital via the internet. Things like NetFlicks are going to take over. Just look how all the video stores are going out of business. Movie Gallery went out of business, and Blockbuster is currently bankrupt.

I may not be the best person to answer this because I rarely watch movies, but frankly, I can't tell the difference between Blu-ray and DVD. The only difference I notice is that my wallet becomes much lighter if I purchase blu-ray. I don't think it will usurp DVD until the price is roughly the same.

Spoiler for Nietszche Quote:

But what did such a Teuton afterwards look like when he had been "improved" and led into a monastery? Like a caricature of a human being, like an abortion: he had become a "sinner," he was in a cage, one had imprisoned him behind nothing but sheer terrifying concepts... There he lay now, sick, miserable, filled with ill-will towards himself; full of hatred for the impulses toward life, full of suspicion of all that was still strong and happy. In short, a "Christian"... - Twighlight of the Idols

Honestly, with an HD monitor and Netflix on my Xbox, I have rented an actual DVD maybe twice in the past 2 years. Buying those expensive disks when you can get (to my knowledge) the same quality through Netflix seems pointless.

Why do people even want 3D? 3D films look stupid to me :?

From what I can tell, Blu-Ray is for when you want the best of the best in terms of video and sound quality. If you're OK with DVD (and lets face it, DVD is scores better than its predecessor, VHS) then chances are making the jump isn't needed.

That being said, I've yet to see a Blu-Ray in action. I'm perfectly fine with DVD right now, though if I had a different means of watching Blu-Ray discs, I'd consider it more. But watching a DVD on a 15.4" 1920x1200 display (my laptop) often as a half screen, I'm fine.
