What will you be doing with the laptop? That'll provide a starting point...

Since you say video, does that mean video editing?

If you want to go for a Windows model, go for either a Dell Inspiron or Studio line. I've heard good things about Lenovo, so you Paul can come in and fill you in on those guys.

Alternatively, you can go for a mac as you mentioned above. It'd probably be cheaper to go with a newer macbook than the macbook pro you mentioned.

either a newer macbook or some sort of a hp laptop...your choice really, research on some features. I would say a decent hard drive, at least 2 gig ram, etc..

If you haven't decided quite yet (can't tell if you've already got your heart set on something or not) and you're looking for a few more options, here are a few others I'd recommend taking a look at.

Lenovo has two series of notebooks, the IdeaPads and the ThinkPads. The IdeaPads, as far as I can tell, aren't overly customizeable. They have quite a few options to choose from, but once you pick out something, it seems that you're getting that hardware. ThinkPads tend to be more expensive, but you can pretty much customize anything you want. I'd at least take a look at them to see if the pricing/performance fits your criteria.

ThinkPads
IdeaPads

If you're looking for a low-ish priced laptop, it looks if you go under the Laptop models and sort by price (less than $800) you've got a few options to look at. They've got 4 NVIDIA GPU laptops, three of which are 256MB GeForce and one of which is a 128 GeForce.

You can do pretty much anything you can do on a PC, on a Mac. Just don't expect to do any gaming, except for an odd game here and there, or a browser based game.
