I was planning on get an iphone, but there is something I need to know. I wanted the one that was $400 but I believe you need to purchase a 2 year plan with AT&T. What I wanted to know is would it still cost the same if I just bought it without a plan or would it cost more?

It'd probably be less without the plan (maybe) but that's the only legal way to use it..You can swap the sim card, and do a bit of hacking if you wanted. That would unlock it to any carrier, allowing you to use it on whichever company's system you prefer.

I don't have one (I've seen a few though) as they're expensive, and they're not supported in Vermont, but I do know that you need a heafty data plan. Like unlimited. Just something to keep in mind.

Yes it is required that you Sign up for a 2 year contract with AT&T. The Cheapest plan is $59.99 a month... You can unlock the phone by hacking it or you can buy a unlocked phone from ebay....
