Quality over ????

Ok so I've decided I'm going to buy a laptop. But I dont know exactly what kind...I have my mind going towards a Mac though.I think the best person to get advice from would be Shane but I'm sure others have info towards other computer brands. So my question is:

What kind of Laptop do you advise me buying?

I will mostly be using it for personal use and such. I will also do schoolwork on it and a little work in Photoshop from time to time. Other than that nothing really than chatting with friends and listening to music.

I also want something that I can rely on not slowing down or getting viruses.

I plan to buy it sometime around November or a little later. I need to get some extra cash on the side. Right now I have about $200 and I'm getting 4 more paychecks which are about $250 each and then I'm selling a crappy laptop I got for free for $300 to a friend. I should have close to $1500 which is a MacBook.

Any other suggestions?

You should try and say what you are mostly going to be using it for, then people can help you better.

Macbook.

As Pika once said, once you go mac, you never go back. I have a Macbook pro (newer model than Shane, mind), and it is an incredibly awesome machine. Great for media. If you want to talk to people on MSN with webcam you might have a problem there, but there are other clients available - I use skype when I want voice and webcam support. For everyday use, though, it's faster and better and more logical than almost any PC.

Photoshop goes like lightning on this thing, too - CS3 that is. Dunno about the older versions, but they may not, since they aren't universal binaries.

Just remember that you wont be able to do much gaming unless you install Windows on it as well.

Yah I kno that I wont be able to do gaming and such, but I really dont play games that much anymore anyway. I'm buying a regular Macbook because I'm not gonna get $2000 that quickly plus if I had $2000 that'd go towards my car lol.

Yea I'd have to say mac as well. The only reason I think anyone should use Windows is either because you have to play fast paced FPS games or you're a security expert and know how to keep it safe.

The only thing I'd say about the macbooks are that if you plan on running parallels you should probably get 2GB of ram. (Parallels is the virtual machine application that lets you run Windows inside of OS X) Plus if you want a bit of insurance it would be a good idea. We don't know how well Leopard will run on 1GB of Ram come October when it's released.

Finally as a final remark I must say that if you decide to go with a PC laptop I'd recomend a Dell. Be sure to get it with a full Windows DVD. That way you can remove all the bloatware that they ship with.

I recommend you go with HP, Or Sony, I would pick Sony over all of these I had sony laptop for about 4 and half yeas, and not a single problem, or IBM, (Lenovo) they are quite good but accessories like batteries,Docking stations,hard drives, memory are quite expensive...So If I were you I'd either go with a HP, or Sony, its your choice bro not mines i am just inputting my opinion.

HP has some good laptops. If you want to customize your computer a bit more, then Dell is better.

I HATE Hps lols I have this crappy one I got for free and I'm selling it to a friend for $300 towards the Mac. But I'm definatly going to get the Mac I've decided. Then I'll just keep my current Dell PC for whatever.

I think macs are the way to go for the common computer user. They are low maintenance and they have a very friendly interface. Linux takes some work and that pays off, but for most people they just want something that runs well, doesn't give them a lot of trouble and is good enough for them to use a set of prescribed programs...if that is you I think mac is your best bet.

Since like you said, you dont do much gaming, a Mac would be really good. You are a graphical artist, so a Mac would be great for that too

I would get a mac, unless you want windows, then get a Dell or Acer and since it will probably have Vista, make sure it has at least 2GB.

I was looking at Vaio's today...they were looking good. But the cheapest in that store I think was $1400 but it has a way bigger screen size than the Macbook.

I believe Dell is now giving the option to load Ubuntu onto machines. I'll have to check, but I think the lack of compatibility that vista offers has really hurt Microsoft.

Dell does give the option to load Ubuntu onto machines sold Statewide only, I think. It's not exactly Microsoft's fault that there is a lack of compatibility with Vista. The drivers which cause much of the compatibility issues are written by other companies, who did not have their drivers ready for Vista's release.
