I went on "Can You Run It?" and it says I have an Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz and says my CPU speed is only 1.7 GHz. Can anybody explain to me why its running at half the speed?

Thank you,

The Noob Extremist,

Des_Zac

Speedstep. For ages Intel has throttled down the clock speed to reduce power use and heat output. If you were to start up something CPU intensive it should spike back up.

If it doesn't, someone could have intentionally clocked you down through the BIOS. This is unlikely, the first is more plausible.

Would increasing the size of my hard drive or taking my two hard drives and replacing them with a larger one help with the speed at all?

If you mean would it help improve just the general speed of your computer: Yes replacing two hard drives with one that has a higher RPM would speed up things a bit but it you probably wouldn't notice much of a difference

If you're curious as to exactly what processor you've got, I'd suggest CPUZ. It'll show you everything about your processor, including what it's rated at as well as the current clock rate.
