Between Jailbreaking + having the 1st gen iPod Touch, I'm good where I am now. 3.1.2, so eventually I'll go 3.1.3, but not much else will change now.
Though I can't say for sure that the only reason is due to the older hardware not being able to run the more advanced features, I'm guessing that's the main reason why the older units won't get the update.
Via Wikipedia: 1st generation: ARM11 620 MHz (underclocked to 400 MHz, then 412 MHz) 2nd generation: ARM11 620 MHz (underclocked to 533 MHz),[1] with internal ARM7 core for Jazelle acceleration for the CPU 1st/2nd generation: 128 MB DRAM for RAM
So they're nearly the same hardware spec wise, other than one has been underclocked more than the other. 133mhz doesn't sound like a huge difference, but for something like multitasking, I don't think I'd risk screwing up everyone's 1st gen units.
At any rate, it's a worthwhile upgrade anyway since I don't believe they're charging for it. Plus if you're already using these features via a jailbreak, you can already put that back as well, and use the features natively.

How did you get those speeds? Is there a way of testing it? Or is that just something you found?

I downloaded it, figure it's pretty good considering that is one of the free updates they are giving and is compatible with everything down to the ipod touch..I agree that it's too bad you dont get nearly half of the new features unless you buy the big bad iphone 4. Great Success overall!
