Unfortunately, my invites are gone, but Google is offering free accounts to anyone with a .edu email address.. Not sure if you've got one, but all you need is that plus a Google account, and you're set.
Past that, if you really want an account, invites can be bought on Ebay for ~$3. It would give you free USA calling, texting, etc. Just would have to have a phone to link it to, as it's not a 1:1 comparison to Skype.

Man, sucks that it's US only. Figured it out when I got an invite. Thank goodness I didn't click the invite link and sent it back to the person who invited me. I wonder if that did something?
Well, does anyone know if it will expand? Preferably soon? It's probably hopeless, but oh well.
