I had a thread of this subject in the past.

I want to get a 500gb external. One that doesn't need a power source other than the computer it is plugged into. And it needs to be USB.

Any ideas?

I have one of these and it works great. It's also worth noting that if your computer ever breaks down and you get a new one, you can put your old computer's hard drive in a special dock so that it can serve as an external hard drive.

I have a WD 500GB drive - simply plug and play via USB. It's only 4 inches by 3 inches and about half an inch thick so I often just take it with me places as I would a normal memory stick. Paid about £60 a year ago or so, but their probably cheaper now and there's a lot on the market similar.

That looks nice. I will assume that's 133 dollars?

Anything from the 2.5" external harddrive category on Newegg should work. They use laptop HDDs, so they don't require external power supplies.

That's nearly 125 USD. About $30 or so more than stuff on Newegg. Not cheap, IMO.
