When you see it in Task Manager, right click it. Can you select the option "Open File Location" ?

If you can what folder does it lead you to?

I've just Googled it (as I'm sure you have), and nothing's come back, which means the chances of it being nasty (spyware, virus, etc.) are fairly slim. Although, I have found HTK is some sort of speech recognition software/compiler/developer. Could this be it?

What does does it say in the Description column? And as Sworder says, where does Open File Location take you?

Are you sure the chances are slim? Some types of spyware, like Vundo, generate filenames that aren't searchable.

Here's what you might wanna try. Go into Msconfig and disable the exe file. Restart and see if it's had any impact. If not? Then keep it disabled, as you do not need it.

Oops I never thought about that. Although the vast majority of spyware isn't that sophisticated, so I'd still be fairly confident that it's not malicious software, but a scan wouldn't hurt, nevertheless.

However, I personally would urge strong caution in disabling running programs because you have no idea what it is what it's doing. Even if it's not a component of the OS, suddenly forcing it to stop may cause problems.

My advice would be to immediately ascertain whether this is malicious software or not. Run a virus/spyware scan, and if it's not picked up, try a different program. For example, if AVG doesn't pick it, try Search and Destroy. Also, open the file location via task manager and use a AVG or other scanner and have it specifically scan the file in question.

Once you've tried a few different scanners and none of them finds anything wrong with it, you can be pretty sure it's okay.

Either ignore it or tell your school's IT admin.

htk34.exe Looks like it would be the main file of HTK 3.4 Hidden Markov Model Toolkit (HTK)
From the HTK Website wrote:
What is HTK?

The Hidden Markov Model Toolkit (HTK) is a portable toolkit for building and manipulating hidden Markov models. HTK is primarily used for speech recognition research although it has been used for numerous other applications including research into speech synthesis, character recognition and DNA sequencing. HTK is in use at hundreds of sites worldwide.---

It appears harmless to me but since you are concerned it would be a good idea to talk with your schools IT admin and ask what it is/bring it to his attention.

Spoiler for Everything else:

A Kid asked Jesus, "How much do you love me?" and Jesus said. "This much."
And spread his arms out on the cross and died.
If you believe that he did this for you put this in your signature.
