What is the difference between the outbox and the sent messages? I think it's that the outbox is for replying to a message that was sent to you but I'm not sure.

Messages that you have sent but the recipient has not yet read go to your outbox.

Once the recipient reads the message, it will be relocated to your Sent Messages folder.
