I'd thought it might have been a glitch as you at least could previously keep your familiar going using summoning pots.

It's definately easier. And I've now realised that I can summon a familiar even when low on points (as long as I have enough to summon the particular familiar) and it remains for its full time even after hitting zero summoning. Nice
