The Dagger. My peculiar way of chaptering is because I can never seem to get chapter size right, so I'll do it in subchapters as well. I'll put the first two chapters up initially. This story will not keep me away from writing for the Round Robin, however I have hit a writer's block there. If I get good enough reviews I'll continue. Edit: Alex 43 wrote that Momsrascal was the only one that would let Manya rate stories, that's not true, I want all the feedback I can get! (although, in different form...I doubt the post box is big enough for some of the things that happen in the story rating of the short stories o.O)

-Prologue-
Dr. Warren Zeta was considered one of the best in his field. When women were pregnant, they asked for Dr. Zeta, but it was hard to get him as your doctor since he was so busy. Dr. Zeta had no children of his own, and he didn't have a wife. One day, a woman named Theresa Canlis and her husband, Richard, came into the hospital. Like many other families, Dr. Zeta was wanted by the Canlises to be their doctor. For once, he was not so busy, and he became the doctor of Theresa, Richard, and their unborn baby.

-Chapter 1: How it All Started-

"It's a boy!" announced Dr. Zeta. Richard Canlis was grinning, but his wife was in heaven. Dr. Zeta handed her the baby, and she declared his name. "My baby...his name shall be Michael. Michael Lorenzo Canlis." Richard smiled even broader. "Michael it is!" said Dr. Zeta. "I just need to run a few tests on Michael to make sure he was...well, born properly." Dr. Zeta began to draw a blood sample, and he stroked the baby. "Wait..." he mumbled in a low voice. The doctor ran his fingers over the baby's head. "There is something wrong with Michael. I'm going to have to take him away to the NICU ward." The joy in the room evaporated as this was said. Theresa asked Dr. Zeta, "NICU?" and he replied, "Neonatal Intensive Care Unit." Richard looked into Theresa's eyes and squeezed her hand. "Michael will be alright, don't worry, honey..." He tried to reassure her but Theresa was so shaken that she was beyond the point of help. Dr. Zeta, followed by a phalanx of doctors, left the room, Michael in his arms.

Dr. Warren Zeta was never seen again.

-Subchapter: The Experiment-

Dr. Zeta looked into the crying baby's eyes. He hurried through the hospital, shouting, "There's a baby in need of help! Out of my way!" Dr. Zeta got into an unpopulated hallway, and opened a closet. Quickly, he uncovered his secret passageway in the closet, and ran through the tunnel past it. Finally, the tunnel opened into an underground room. On shelves around the room were mounted odd objects, all relating to demons, ghosts, and other supernatural beings.

Dr. Zeta sat the baby on what was actually a machine that would have been used in NICU, had this been NICU. He ran the machine so that it would keep the baby alive, even though there was really nothing wrong with Michael. Dr. Zeta stroked his beard once, then he walked over to a cabinet on the wall. He swung it open to reveal bottles, seemingly empty. "This is my time," Dr. Zeta mumbled to himself. "Time to show the world that I can do more than deliver babies to parents. I can become the parent of something with nearly infinite power. I can be strong."

Dr. Zeta selected a bottle and began to talk to himself again. "I can only hope those men at The Shop were right. I hope this is really what I want." Written on a label stuck to the bottle was "Kaku, Wolf Demon of Storms". Casually, Dr. Zeta strolled over to baby Michael. "This will be you. My previous attempts failing, I am CERTAIN this will be it. I have sacrificed my career and everything I own to make you mine. It's worth the risk." Dr. Zeta set the bottle on a countertop and washed his hands. He then picked up a sort of paint, and painted a pentagram on his left palm, a symbol of a tengu on his right. Confidently, he placed both hands on Michael, left on his head, right on the baby's stomach. When the images were on Michael he grabbed the bottle labeled "Kaku" and placed it in Michael's hands.

Dr. Zeta uncorked the bottle and took shelter. A massive blue light erupted from the baby, and Dr. Zeta heard howling. When the blue light went away, the doctor climbed out. The symbols were gone, and the Kaku bottle was nowhere to be found. Dr. Zeta began looking for any sign that the sealing had worked. "No wolf attributes...no fangs, claws, or fur," he mumbled. Then, he looked into the baby's eyes. They glowed yellow. "That must be a sign...a sign that I have finally sealed one!" Dr. Zeta nearly shouted. Michael suddenly fell asleep, probably very tired.

-Chapter 2: An Unusual Childhood-

Michael was now the age of four. Dr. Zeta no longer called him Michael; instead he was Gabriel, the name of an angel. His hair was pure gray, like silver, he had already lost most of his baby teeth, and he had great stealth and endurance. Already it was blatant the boy was not like other four-year-olds. He was very quiet, and he didn't move around the room in a boisterous manner. He prowled. Gabriel refused to eat anything that was not meat, and he had a peculiar affinity to lightning storms. When a lightning storm was outside (even though Gabriel had never been outside, he could somehow sense when a storm was about), he would run around the room that was his entire world all night, without tiring. Sometimes, he howled. Dr. Zeta punished Gabriel for howling, as he was paranoid about the security of himself and the boy. Dr. Zeta hadn't been outside for the four years since Gabriel's abduction. To get the supplies they needed, Dr. Zeta had threatened other doctors into bringing things from the outside world.

Gabriel also was being taught in dagger arts, and he was extremely possessive of his razor-sharp dagger. Nobody could take that away from him.

One day, Dr. Zeta told Gabriel, "My son, there is someone I want you to meet,". Gabriel had never seen anything but the doctors that brought his food, and Dr. Zeta. Now, his "father" was leading him through the room. There was a small gate, much like the ones used to keep young children from falling down stairs; however, this one was electric. Gabriel had been instructed to never go beyond the gate, even though it had shocked him a few times. This time, Dr. Zeta opened a cabinet, and took a key out. He unlocked the gate with the key, and it rattled open. Gabriel was very curious to what was beyond, but still he obediently stayed behind Dr. Zeta. The pair moved down a very dark tunnel. Dr. Zeta turned on a flashlight, but Gabriel could already see perfectly with his powerful wolf eyesight. Dr. Zeta opened a metal door, using the gate key.

He pushed it open, and inside was what might have once been a teenage boy. He was deformed, and he had black stripes all over his body. He was very hairy, and the hair was all bright orange. He had long fangs that extended out of his mouth, and he was very large. "This is David. He was my first experiment," announced Dr. Zeta. Gabriel looked at the boy. At the word experiment, the boy had bristled and growled at Gabriel. He growled back. There were torches around this room, and Gabriel was careful to stay away from them. He didn't like fire at all. David looked up sadly at Gabriel. His hatred for Dr. Zeta was obvious, and he was chained. David snarled and leaped to the end of his chain. Gabriel also noticed that his eyes weren't like Dr. Zeta's; they were yellow with black slits, catlike, and all-seeing. Dr. Zeta pulled meat out of a pocket in the doctor's coat he insisted in always wearing, and tossed it to David. David didn't eat it, as if not wanting to give Dr. Zeta the satisfaction of knowing that he was David's controller. "Let's go, Gabriel." said Dr. Zeta, and they went back the way they came.

-Chapter 3: Gabriel Grows in Age and Other Things-

Gabriel's 10th birthday was approaching. He hadn't gained any abilities since many years ago, and Dr. Zeta was getting impatient. Now, each day, Gabriel was forced to run on a treadmill, and be tested. If he failed to comply, he was shot by a stolen Taser. Gabriel didn't talk much at all, and although Dr. Zeta's tests indicicated that he was very sharp, Dr. Zeta kept him from learning things that would help to educate him in the ways of the world. The smarter he was, the easier it would be for him to escape.

Dr. Zeta clapped his hands, waking a sleeping Gabriel. The boy stood awkwardly, and stumbled over to the metal table in a corner of the room, where his breakfast (bacon, ham, and sausage) was waiting. Dr. Zeta said in the low voice that meant that he was being very serious, "Gabriel, you are not eating yet. Now, you will do two running tests a day, not one," Gabriel looked away, and took a slice of bacon. Dr. Zeta said it again, but still Gabriel started to eat. He walked over to a cabinet and pulled out the Taser. "Gabriel, come do your running! I command you!" With that he turned the Taser on it's lowest setting and fired it at Gabriel. The boy didn't even flinch as the electricity hit him. Dr. Zeta turned the setting of the gun up a little. "Gabriel, come here or I will shoot you again!" Gabriel, meanwhile, was thinking of the gate. What had just hit him hadn't hurt, yet it felt like the same power coming from the gate. He didn't know where he could go, but he knew that his food was always brought from past the gate. At the least, he would find food. Dr. Zeta fired the Taser again. It didn't feel any different from the time before. Gabriel slowly stood up. Dr. Zeta said, "Thanks, Gabriel. Now go do your running and you can finish your breakfast after that." Instead of moving toward the treadmill, Gabriel started toward Dr. Zeta. "Gabriel, I will not hesitate to shoot you to Hell and back." Dr. Zeta fumbled with the Taser, and Gabriel powerfully leapt upon him and wrestled him to the floor. Dr. Zeta fired the Taser over and over into Gabriel, but it only seemed to make him stronger. Gabriel pulled out his dagger, and Dr. Zeta thought he would surely die. He tried to take the dagger from Gabriel, but he shouted over and over, "My dagger! My dagger!" Gabriel cut into Dr. Zeta's hand, badly slicing one or two of his fingers. Dr. Zeta dropped the Taser, and Gabriel flipped his dagger and struck the man continuously with its handle, until he became unconscious. Gabriel slipped the dagger into its sheath, and walked around the room to the closet where Dr. Zeta kept clothing. Gabriel didn't like clothing that much, but the food-bringers wore it. He selected a T-shirt, pants, and shoes. Gabriel dressed himself in Dr. Zeta's oversized clothing, and he strode over to the gate.

-Subchapter 3: Gabriel's Exit-

Gabriel didn't know where Dr. Zeta kept the gate-opening object, so he'd have to go above it. The gate had grown from the baby gate it had been before, to a gate that almost touched the ceiling. Experimentally, Gabriel stuck his hand out and touched the gate. It felt good, and strong, nearly exactly like the Taser blasts. The fence was basically a big chainlink fence, electrified. Gabriel put his hands through the holes in the fence, and his feet in others. He hoisted himself up easily, feeling invincible. He was at the top of the fence quickly. Here, was barbed wire at the top, still electrified. Gabriel tried to climb this too, but a large cut opened on his hand when he tried to do so. Pain had never been something he'd give in to. Gabriel pulled himself so that his upper body was over the barbed wire. Carefully, he stuck his feet through the topmost holes in the fence and left his hands in the air. Then, he jumped. He hit something hard at the top of his jump, which he assumed was ceiling, and basically fell the rest of the way. Gabriel crashed down on the ground, but by willpower or the want to get away from Dr. Zeta pulled him up again. He staggered to his feet, and lumbered through the tunnel.

As he ran through the tunnel, Gabriel tore off a piece of Dr. Zeta's shirt and tied it around his bleeding hand. Gabriel passed a metal door, and he suddenly remembered the boy who wasn't really a boy. David. As much as he wanted to free him, Gabriel didn't have the key, and he didn't think the door would move. Gabriel noticed that there were two ways to go in the part of the tunnel he had reached. He chose the left path, and walked down it. For some reason, the room was becoming lighter. Gabriel blinked a few times. There was a sort of ledge up above, and some stairs. Gabriel had never seen stairs, but they led up to the mysterious light. He fell a few times off of them, but managed to get up the stairs onto the ledge. Gabriel looked up from the ledge, and saw brightness, more than he had ever experienced. He cried out and put his hands over his eyes. Gabriel looked back off the ledge down the tunnels where he had always lived, and decided maybe, just maybe, the light would go out if he waited for it to. He crawled into a corner of the ledge, and fell asleep.

Manya: Party pooper!

In a nutshell, you have an impressive writing skill. Flawless spelling and sentence structure, great imaginary device, and a plotline thast actually created interest. I'm rather impressed. Can't wait for the next part.
