Could be due to an overheating problem. Is the lag visual (low FPS) or more like you / others are jerking around instead of moving smoothly?

If it normally works fine but then will start doing this after a while, I expect either your CPU or GPU is getting too hot and is throttling back once it hits its thermal limit after a bit. If you can add another fan or heat sink to the CPU/GPU it would probably help alleviate the problem, but if it's a new computer and its got these issues it may be covered under warranty.

Im guessing it is not a custom build right? If it is not can you link me to the site with the specs, or give me the brand and model number?

What video card do you have?
What processor do you have?

I'm with Paul, seems like an overheating issue.
Download HWMonitor from here: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
...And check the temperatures.

Holy... F...
Mother of...

If those readings are correct, that could definitely be one of the problems.
Normal temperatures are around 30ºC-40ºC on idle usage and 40ºC-80ºC on full usage.

Check if your cooling system is working, clean the fans from dust and debris, etc.

I doubt they are correct. If they are the GPU would be fried, and he house would be currently buring down.

Max temps for a GPU to run safe are around 95C, though running 80C under load would be normal. CPU, however, 80C would be at the high end of operating temps only seen under max load for a bit.

Something's not quite right. If it's covered under warranty, get info from the OEM. Otherwise, verify that the heatsinks are seated correctly ensure you actually *have* airflow in the case. Perhaps a fan died recently and this is where the problem is coming from?

What's at 95C at idle? Your GPU?

If so and it's under warranty, get it replaced. If not, check to see if the heatsink is on there properly. If it has a fan built in, verify that it's working.

It might just be a malfunction in the fan controller as well. I remember I installed the latest driver from Nvidia on an Asus GPU and it immediately warned me about dangerous temperatures and such. That was because Asus had adjusted the driver so that it could interpret the data it was getting from the fan controller and heat sink. I doubt any GPU could reach those temperatures and survive it.
