First I have to ask is, are you a limited user? Also does it say anything when it refuses to delete the file? If it does say something like "Permission not allowed" or "Access not allowed" then you need to be on admin to delete it.

You could try creating another file with the same name, saying 'overwrite the existing file' and then delete that. With Vista, most likely the problem can be solved by refreshing the desktop (right click -> refresh) but if this is still there, that probably won't work. If it doesn't link to anything, and you're sure it really doesn't need to be deleted, try deleting it with the Secure Shredder found in Spybot Search and Destroy. Don't know if it'll complain about it, but it's worth a shot.

If all else fails that Pfkninenines said, then there probably is no way to remove it. (But I have no idea) There is a way to make it invisible though for the time being.

I can't tell if you have Windows XP or older, but seeing as Windows should have the same kind of stuff, then I'll show it to you.

You didn't clarify if you had rename or properties, though, but... For the icon, go to Right Click Icon > Chance Icon > Change the bar code to:
Code:
%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll

Scroll down a bit of those icons until you find a blank one. There should be one in the first half of icons. The press Okay > Apply. In that, the icon should disappear, but there is still text.

For the text, click rename > when the current name is hi-lighted, press space. Then hold Alt, type in 0160 on the num pad (making sure that Num Lock is on) and then release Alt. And that should make it invisible. You may move it to some location you normally don't put icons.

Hope that worked/helped.

If your using XP you should be able to manually remove any desktop icon by going into control panel - Display - Desktop - Customize Desktop - Clean Desktop Now - then tick the box for the icon you want removed.

If you're using Vista let me know and I'll look at that when I next log on. I'm on XP at the moment as I use a dual boot and prefer XP for games.

Glad to be able to help.

I know how annoying it is to have stuff showing you don't want.
