Halloween is on Monday. Halloween is a day that many people look forward to, I know for me it was always a benchmark of when we're halfway to Christmas. It was also a time to have some fun. I'd like to bring attention to the decision by two Calgary schools to ban scary costumes. They want the kids to wear "caring" costumes.

http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/10/26 ... -halloween-costumes/

"Michelle Speight, who serves as principal for both inner city schools, said the move is designed to accommodate all children, including those with cultural backgrounds that don’t celebrate Halloween. It’s also an attempt by staff to prevent students from wearing costumes inappropriate for young children."

"[A]ccomdate all children, including those with cultural backgrounds that don't celebrate Halloween." Canada's supposed to be a multi-cultural country, if we're limiting what people can do isn't that against what multiculturalism is about? Oh and to "prevent students from wearing costumes inappropriate for young children," who cares. I went to a public K-6 school and there were no restrictions as to what could be worn providing you didn't bring any weapons (swords and guns primarily). Some kids well into the K-6 range are scared of clowns, does that mean being a clown isn't an option?

What's too far in your view? A ghost? A grim reaper with a scythe? How about a grim reaper with a bloody scythe? Or what about a zombie with an axe through your skull? What about a homosexual person? What about a Nazi? What about a KKK member? According to these schools all of these would be too scary or not "politically correct" since that's what everyone is so jumpy about these days. Where would you draw the line?

The point here is that some people are trying to change long lasting traditions that have lasted for decades. What's next, no acknowledgement of Christmas and instead just having a generic winter break that straddles the new year? Or maybe not acknowledging Remembrance Day (November 11th, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_Day) because it has to deal with war and may be unsettling for some people?

I know that people reading this will think this is a bit absurd that something like this can happen in a school, I do too, but it's setting a precedent for what may happen in the future. We need to ask ourselves how far is far enough and when this endless obsession with political correctness will stop.

So cannot be a ghost because you might be labeled as a wannabe KKK.

Cannot be a pirate because of the 5'o clock shadow is too scary.

Ninjas are scary for people who are decedents of samurai families.

Cannot be batman, for bats are scary for people.

Cannot be an angel because lucifier was a fallen angel.

So.... people dress up as postal worker?

Postal worker would be illegal impersonation, of course. :D

I mean, there's being over the top scary and serious and then just having fun. It seems like both are being taken away.

That's just silly. People always try to mess with Halloween but it never sticks. A friend of mine told me that her planned community decided to have "official" trick or treating happen on the weekend instead of on Monday and there was such an uproar about it that they never did it again

Oh and to "prevent students from wearing costumes inappropriate for young children," who cares.

Well you probably wouldn't care a kid wearing a costume that might as well have been from a scene in a R rated movie, but if a kid was to wear one of those slutty costumes, I'm sure you would. XD

Anyways, I dunno. There was a cloak on display at a store and my little sister in kindergarten got so scared just by a mere cloak. As school is a learning environment it'd be pretty much useless for her to even be there that day if she was going to be like that if she saw someone wearing something that was actually scary. It's not like dressing up in costumes on the 31st of October is an instrumental part of school... especially considering some schools ban individuality in appearance all together (uniforms) but I guess it's usually the "**** PC!!!" type in support of that. Not that I know how scary is too scary to them and regarding what age levels for them.

The thing on other cultures doesn't make sense though unless they have lots of kids in younger grades that were raised in other countries for their lives thus far, moving here and then on their first Hallowe'en having no idea why everyone is dressed like they were just slaughtered or just slaughtered someone... but if they are that young they'd probably be born in Canada anyways. In which case, there shouldn't be a problem since they'd more understand the idea.

On your Christmas bit, a generic winter holiday would be a lot better than one that only encompasses Christmas... which I guess it was good that the schools I went to actually acknowledged that people who celebrate Christmas weren't the only people who existed. But I guess actually realizing there are other holidays at the time of the winter holidays is too politically correct or something. "I CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF JESUS AND SANTA CLAUS FLYING AROUND ON A SLEIGH PULLED BY FLYING REINDEERS AND GIVING PRESENTS TO EVERYONE NOT SOME MADE UP STORY ABOUT LIGHTING CANDLES, I WONT ADMIT THERE ARE OTHER HOLIDAYS AROUND THIS TIME CUZ IGNORANCE TRUMPS 'POLITICAL CORRECTNESS'". Not speaking to anyone, just people who are like "Happy holidays? Excuse me?? I happen to celebrate Christmas, stop trying to ruin it" really annoy me.
And Remembrance day should be about remembering the people who were killed and affected by war and remembering the price that was paid for the outcome, not glorifying war in the first place so people who are unsettled about the idea of war should be in support of Remembrance day. Anyways, remembering our history is more important than dressing up in blood and stuff.

In short, people in public office should lighten up and have some fun.

Is there even anywhere that prohibits kids from wishing each other Merry Christmas? Not saying I'd be surprised if there was, because there are always cases... like that history teacher who had taught that the holocaust never happened for years. And my cousins' textbooks are all religious versions of stuff, which I noticed had omitted certain things or altered them to be more favourable towards religion.

Anyways, if you're just talking about "Happy Holidays" as a theme in school, not prohibiting the mention of Christmas and stuff, I really don't see the problem? It's not about being PC, it's about recognizing the existence of people. If you wish your class "Merry Christmas" before the winter holidays, you are making the assumption that everyone there celebrates Christmas, and if they don't, it's not like they matter... they're just dirty immigrants right? Oh they're not first generation?? DOESN'T MATTER THEY'RE NOT PURE BLOOD!! Secluding individuals in a group of adults just shows how much of a **** you are, so whatever, do that depending how much you care about who you are, but secluding individuals in a group of kids?... It's horrible to leave a child feeling left out for your own selfishness (pretending your holiday is the only one that exists). Kids have not been supposed to act like miniature adults for a long long long time.
