AT&T is the lowest-scoring cell-phone carrier in the U.S., according to a satisfaction survey of 58,000 ConsumerReports.org readers. Of all the carriers rated, AT&T was the only one to drop significantly in overall satisfaction.
Over half of the survey respondents who used AT&T as a carrier owned some version of the iPhone, the Apple smart phone that is exclusive to AT&T, at least for now. Consumer Reports data, reflecting all versions of the phone, found that iPhone owners were much less satisfied with their carrier and rated data service (Web and e-mail) lower than owners of smart phones on other carriers that, like the iPhone, have a host of apps to encourage heavy data use.
"Our survey suggests that an iPhone from Verizon Wireless, which is rumored, could indeed be good news for iPhone fans," said Paul Reynolds, Electronics Editor for Consumer Reports.
Also big news this year: U.S. Cellular—which serves 26 states, mostly in the South and Midwest—beat out Verizon Wireless as the top-rated provider for contract service. Also, Sprint has pulled even in overall satisfaction with Verizon, which has been the clear top provider in our Ratings in most years since 2003. Sprint even scored better than Verizon in some aspects of customer service, in a remarkable turnaround.
The survey is part of our annual comprehensive cell-phone package, which hits newsstands tomorrow (Dec. 7) as part of the January issue of Consumer Reports. It will also post online at CRO tomorrow morning. Subscribers will be able to get full Ratings and all the details on the story, including city-by-city Ratings for 23 metro areas.
I agree with the article. I have used ATT and verizon, in almost everywhere I went with ATT I had no reception or very poor. When I switched to verizon, I was happy to finally get signal.

I have Att with a samsung focus. (windows phone 7) Personaly I don't mind AT&T that much. For where I am in the country I get service most places. Speed could be better but I am satified. Give them 7/10. I don't see why most people get ***** over them.

I might be wrong, don't follow mobile-ness in the US all that much but, wasn't AT&T the last to get and HSPA+ network up? Let's see: Sprint has 4G from Clearwire (I know that for sure), I think Verizon's getting LTE, and T-Mobile has HSPA+ that they're branding as 4G speeds (especially with the recent mT). That's lame.
And wasn't everyone not so impressed when AT&T FINALLY got Android phones? They have the Captivate (Rogers has that here, reinforcing the old Rogers AT&T brand, I believe?), the Aria (which is the equivalent to my phone in Canada, the Legend), the X10 (Canada got it first, moooooooonths back), the Backflip (crappy mid-range imo), the Flipout (omgwtf crappiest phone ever, worse than the Wildfire), the Flipside (ew, BLUR), and the Bravo (<--). They also carry all the Windows Phone 7 devices that we have in Canada right now (Focus on Rogers, 7 Surround on TELUS, and Quantum on Bell). Oh yeah, and even with Android, there was that whole fiasco I kept hearing about not being able to use third-party stuff. ****. THAT'S BAD.
And then there's the iPhone users:
Spoiler for Rant about iPhone users:
I really, really hate iPhone users because they (most people) don't appreciate the iPhone for the way it is. They ***** and ***** and ***** about the service ATT gives them (exclusivity) and not care one bit about how ATT might actually benefit them as opposed to CDMA networks etc such as Verizon. In my experience, people who have iPhones just like to brag it. EVERYONE HAS ONE NOW. WHY SHOW IT OFF? Walking out of English today, I saw this girl hold out her iPhone 4 while listening to music, as if she was so far-sighted to use the goshforsaken phone! She also kept looking at the crowds to see if anyone was looking at her, as if she was a _____ looking for a date, AT A BAR. SHE DON'T BELONG IN AN ACADEMIC SCHOOL. The main problem is that they think they're so technologically savvy that they're on top of the mobile world! I'm not saying Android devices, or others are better, more superior. I'm just saying that they should stop embracing the iPhone's so-called "perfectness" and realize that there are hits and misses! I hate the iPhone with a passion, I really do, that's a different story but I just couldn't help focussing on some users. Crap, even one of my closest friends have gotten under the influence of the iPhone's "awesomeness", without good reasoning too! I respect users that actually provide reason why it's better, they're making an attempt of getting into a heated argument with me (which I enjoy) but people that I don't know, that brag their wealth in a lot of this BS, man I really, really hate those people. Didn't mean to offend anyone so that's why I posted this last part here.
Wow, I got carried away, so much that you won't make any sense of it. This was my chance to rage and lash out at the iPhone and see if you guys could correct me on my knowledge of the US mobile world. ^^ Yeah, all I'm saying is that AT&T seems like it sucks (as with Trekkie's title), with a hint that iPhone users make it seem so much worse. Unsurprisingly, it's like Rogers here: amazing dumbphones, meh-okayish smartphones. Crappy service (to a lot of people, if you can remember some data changes that enraged users in contract), crappy support. Thinks they're the king of the country's mobile space(?). Oh yeah, plus ridiculous out of contract prices.
Note: I'm a bit focussed with homework atm, but I felt like taking a lash at this topic, so if I didn't make sense, or post some BS that you don't agree with (I probably didn't agree with either, with my concentration), it probably wasn't my intention, so go easy on beating me up, k?
EDIT: Can't comment on service, but if anywhere in that little soup that I just wrote seemed like I did, it was from what's the word... speculation (?) that my opinion followed, k?
Yah, what irritates me are the random dropped calls.

I'm ok with Verizon, but I want to find a better company. I'd like to get a smart phone in the future as an upgrade, but not sure what data plan is cheapest and most effective for me.
I have an iPhone, and it's good for pretty much everything except making calls and texting. I have to put my phone near my window for it to send text messages, and I don't think I can make a call longer than 30 minutes without it dropping, even in areas with good signals.
