I don't know how familiar you guys are with Youtube and/or the Creation science debate, but one of the people I've noticed that makes a lot of statements on the issue is TheThinkingAtheist. But every time I watch one of his videos, the methods he uses to argue are complete crap. I took philosophy and an argumentation course this year and found a lot of holes in his logic and how he tries to argue things. If anything, he reduces arguments to ridicule and illogical assumptions. He breaks nearly every rule in argumentation and thusly constructs poor arguments that to a thinking person don't make sense or even apply, but to the non-thinker or uneducated person, can come across as good wisdom or sense. Now, I'm not here to start a religious debate or anything like that, but what I'm here to ask is if this type of argumentation or thinking is acceptable in society. Free speech is nice and all, but if you are going to make an argument or put knowledge out there, shouldn't you present it in the most impartial and fair way as possible? How can you make decisions in life based on this type of information or argumentation? It just doesn't seem right...or maybe that's just me.

People on youtube are mindless. I'm atheist and you can't change that. There are good points made by both sides of the religion debate and youtube doesn't do much to help. The same methods are used over and over by both sides and really the videos are for amusement to me by now. Basically looking through comments and listening to the new ways old methods are stated are the only points of these videos.

The media in general reports biased one sided views all the time and people just accept it. So yes it is acceptable.

basically, if it sounds good, most people will accept it. its basically impossible to convert a very religious person, so its a bad idea in general to post videos about religion on youtube.

i think everyone should choose what they want to believe in (no brainwashing parents that are all too common these days), as long as they dont try to convert others or start conflict

For most people, the logical soundness of an argument is irrelevant as long as the argument is compelling (and generally agrees with their preconceived notions). This is an unfortunate fact that can't really be changed. I (being an atheist), don't think that it will have a serious effect to make bad assumptions on this topic either way, unless you're talking about people who throw their lives away as nuns/priests/etc.. But I suppose if they enjoy it, more power to them.

I will say, however, that I wouldn't put too much stock in philosophy courses. I took one last semester, and was thoroughly disappointed in it.

Spoiler for Nietszche Quote:

But what did such a Teuton afterwards look like when he had been "improved" and led into a monastery? Like a caricature of a human being, like an abortion: he had become a "sinner," he was in a cage, one had imprisoned him behind nothing but sheer terrifying concepts... There he lay now, sick, miserable, filled with ill-will towards himself; full of hatred for the impulses toward life, full of suspicion of all that was still strong and happy. In short, a "Christian"... - Twighlight of the Idols

Honestly, when it comes to a class, it's really a toss up. If you had the teacher I had, you might have enjoyed it more. I had great professors who taught very well and impartially. I wouldn't base your opinion of philosophy classes off one instance. Again, it's bad to infer something about the whole from one thing. You should have learned that in an argumentation class. :P Philosophy should be interesting and enjoyable since it gets you to think and be able to back up what you believe (or at least help you better understand what you believe).
