LOS ANGELES — The release date for the sixth Harry Potter movie, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," was pushed back on Thursday to July 2009 from its original slot in November 2008, movie studio Warner Bros. said.

The eight-month change in the opening date to July 17, 2009, is expected to disappoint millions of Harry Potter fans around the world who have already been waiting more than a year to watch the next big-screen installment in the international literary and film phenomenon.

Trailers for "Half-Blood Prince" began running last week in advance of the expected November movie release worldwide.

Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc, said it had decided to make the change to bolster its release schedule for the lucrative summer moviegoing season -- a period that can account for as much as 40 percent of Hollywood's annual box office receipts.

Warner Bros. President Alan Horn said the studio was also still feeling repercussions from the three-month Hollywood screenwriters strike that ended in February but has "impacted the readiness of scripts for other films."

"We know the summer season is an ideal window for a family ... release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment," Horn said.

The studio said the change of date would not alter production plans for the final, two-part Potter movie adventure, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." The release date for part one is tentatively set for November 2010.

"Deathly Hallows," the seventh and last story from British author J.K. Rowling about the boy wizard and his friends at Hogwarts School, was published in July 2007. The series has sold an estimated 400 million copies, and the books have been translated into more than 60 languages.

This sucks, I was really looking forward to seeing it soon. Looks like we have to wait almost a whole more year. Whats even worse is it sounds like it's being delayed just so it can make more money.

Hmm .. some things are too good to be true I guess :| From the exert I get the idea WB is pushing it into next summer to make more money ... and that's the only reason? Hopefully they try making it better before it goes on, but it's their movie after all :|

I'd be really upset if I was a big fan.

Don't get me wrong; I like the Harry Potter books a lot. But they've gone downhill after the 5th book and the movies aren't that great anyway.

I'm not a true HP fan, but I like the series, and the delay will help me catch up on the movies I've missed. :P

I'm not a hardcore harry potter fan but I did get all the latest books on the day they came out and everything. I was looking forward to this movie but it doesn't really concern me that it won't be coming out until next july since I've always liked the books better.

When I was little I read the books, and I certainly congratulate J.K. Rowling for getting kids to read again, but I just don't think they are that good. It seems as though she started to run out of ideas after the 4th book, so I stopped reading.

The movies... oh the movies. They made a huge mistake of releasing the first 3 movies at the same time (Christmas) as The Lord of the Rings, so I wouldn't even consider the Harry Potter to be anything special. The biggest mistake about the whole Harry Potter franchise is that the main characters are children. Now I'm not against children or anything, but young actors just don't have enough experience to give good performances. Seriously, the teachers and other characters are great actors, such as Professor Snape, but the kids can't act worth ****. I'm not just against Harry Potter, but the only child actor that I've ever thought was good was the little girl in Pans Labyrinth.

The trailer looked rather nice so I was looking forward to HBP. I'm slightly annoyed that it got pushed off but ah well, it's WB's decision.

They aren't that bad actors, if they were horrible they wouldn't be acting in the first place. Plus, they are hardly children, all three are 18, 19, and 19.

Guess I should reset my Desktop Countdown :(
Apparently the upcoming "Twilight" film has been moved up to take HBP's place. Totally ridiculous.
