As some of you may know if you watch the news, the New Yorker has published an issue with a cover depicting Obama with an Islamist appearance, complete with a turban and a flag burning in the fireplace. His wife also appears in the form of a terrorist equipped with an assault rifle. The New Yorker calls it satire, but the Obama supporters have become outraged.

This is the cover: Image

An article about the controversy

Do you believe that it was just a harmless piece of fun, or was it "tasteless and offensive"?

I feel bad for laughing at first, but it's satire. You see it everywhere you look these days, but making such a joke on the first black man to run for president would obviously inspire uproar. I'm not sure they could've made it any worse actually XD it's offensive, but funny in my mind.

Americans bark on about freedom of speech. Surely that, however distasteful, is an example of free speech?

Im glad you take time to read, your one of those people who have nothing to bring to this community besides a bad attitude. I shall quote myself here so i can explain it to your simple unevolved mind.

"we (Americans) can compare Bush (the president) to Hitler (leaders of Nazi Germany) who killed jews i shall note (the holocaust), so in this sentence i was merely stating that Bush has been compared to Hitler in America, and the media says nothing. But the second we draw Obama, there golden child in a turban its offensive.

Please feel free to pm me

It's times like this I'm happy that "freedom" of speech is non-existant in Singapore.

I don't think it's really all that funny or tasteful and I honestly think their intent to "cause a stir" backfired. The New Yorker has always been a boring magazine with boring stories that only boring people read. I don't think anyone can really get mad at them for publishing that cover since their magazine is really only useful for recycling.

I'm probably wrong but ... wouldn't this be freedom of the press too?

Wiki doesn't say anything.

You don't know what the war 1991.-1995.(landmine removal and reconstruction of infrastructure consequent to 1992-95 civil strife) did to my country. So please don't act smart.

"Air pollution (from metallurgical plants) and resulting acid rain is damaging the forests; coastal pollution from industrial and domestic waste" - We're not a industrial country. The Italian river Po is the problem of the acid rain. It's damaging forests, forests are in the north-western part of the country which is called Lika. The northern industrial zone of Italy (Torino, Milano) throw all the garbage into that river which ---condenstates??--- , the western wind blows it into my country and there the acid rain is created.

"transit point along the Balkan route for Southwest Asian heroin to Western Europe; has been used as a transit point for maritime shipments of South American cocaine bound for Western Europe " - Oh no, drug smuggling through my country, look at the whole Balkan... It's all poor. Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, you don't know really what war did here and communism. We were all part of Yugoslavia so please don't act smart and Wiki doesn't say ****, come here, live and then write your own article on Wiki, ok?

I'm telling you that you should think twice before calling another nation primitive. Obviously, you couldn't determine that from my message. And seeing as I was born in the USSR, yes, I do know about communism and what it did to Russia and Eastern Europe.
