Rooftop stand-off brought to an end
12.25PM, Wed Jun 7 2006
A suspected car thief involved in a marathon 20-hour rooftop stand-off is being questioned by police.
Barry Chambers, 27, climbed up a drainpipe at 2am yesterday and stubbornly refused to come down from the three-storey property in Gloucester city for the rest of the day.
He had escaped onto the roof following a police pursuit of a vehicle from Cheltenham to Gloucester.
Police cordoned off the area in Midland Road as Chambers dismantled a chimney and hurled bricks at officers and passers-by.
Residents had to be moved from nearby houses for their own safety as the situation became increasingly dangerous.
The stand-off ended when specialist negotiators finally persuaded the man to give himself up as a large crowd of spectators cheered.
He is now being questioned at a local police station.
Gloucestershire Police have been forced to defend their decision to supply Chambers with a takeaway meal and a bottle of cola during incident.
A spokeswoman said: "Although he was on the roof being a nuisance, we still have to look after his well-being and human rights.
"The meal was part of the negotiation process and certain requests were made which we tried to fulfil, because we wanted to work with him and persuade him to come down.
"It was a hot day and it wouldn't have been in our interest if he had passed out through a lack of fluid and fell from the roof. That could have been dangerous to other people."

For the record cause it doesn't say it in that artical the guy demanded a kfc bucket and a coke. The police got him the kfc bucket and a can of coke..he then threw the coke back and demanded a bottle..and they did it.
I don't care what they say, you don't hand deliver the guy a kfc bucket and give in to all his demands like that. Pathetic - bete wont get in trouble for it either.
