Has this not been happening years before the media gave attention to it?

There's a perfectly legitimate reason as to why it needs to be done. Does the FBI have any interest in your particular personal life? Yes, but not to an extent where they'll be getting into your phones unless you have "association with the mafia", or any other affiliation with crime.

Regardless if I discovered about this three days ago, or three years ago, there's really nothing surprising about this, nor would it be surprising to discover that they've gone to larger lengths from simply listening to your conversations.

Now why would they do that? XD

There not going to be randomly checking you, if you're suspected of breaking the law (and even then it's going to have to be pretty **** major) you're safe enough.

My best friends phone is tapped, lol.
Long story but.. he did something dumb now they tapped his phone.
We are all almost 100% sure of it.

Im sure the government is/has listened to your conversations at some time.
You may never know...
