So today i went to a new fire house dedication, it was nice till i went inside and was shocked. The fire service is a dirty profession and dont get me wrong we deserve nice stuff but this new fire house is taking it to far. This new fire house which is Engine Company 21 serves in the poorest, most crime infested part of the city, Portland, or the "Hood". So they have geothermic heating and air, re circulated water for the showers and stuff which makes me kinda not ready to take a shower there, apparently it cleans the water and waters the grass or something. all the lights are LED, and everything is either made from recycled plastic or recycled wood. In total this new fire house cost $1.2m and over $500k of that was making it green. So does anyone else have any government buildings in there city which are over green in there city?

in singapore the water that comes out of the pipe is recycled, filtered water from the toilets.

the water tastes like chlorine.

nope, we don't have any of that in our town. not that i know of anyway. but i see nothing wrong with it. sure it cost a little more at first, but in the long run it well most likely end up saveing your town money.

they installed a water filtration and recycle system to water a patch of grass the size of my dorm room.....Its a nice idea but that $500,000 could have been spent making the place more like home. Sure the energy efficient appliances are a nice touch and will same energy but does where the firemen sleep need an air filtration system per bunk?

I looked up the building of fire stations (hey, I'm bored), and found that a lot of them are in the range of $1-2 million with or without green technology. So I'm not sure where this figure of $500,000 came from. Green technology is an investment. If you put forth money to save energy, water, etc then that's money that won't have to be spent in future.

yeah i can agree that's its a good investment, just thought they went a little overboard. The reason you want to make them like home is because the firefighters are there for 24 hours every other day, so it is a home, hence fire house.....

I'm questioning the geothermic heating since the technology isn't there to just drill down anywhere to get heat (drills aren't powerful enough), do you live near a hot spring or something?

wow, that does seem to be taking a little bit far. but apparently my city is recycling the roads and making them into side walks... that seems a bit strange but also interesting.

I think that it is more of them just wanting to brag about doing good things for the environment. This way in the future if we have environmental problems they can act like they did the most they possibly could. [-X

Plus, with the good mild weather in my city, it's known as the "biking capital of Canada" - really annoying trying to drive when you have them all on the road! :P
