Only microwave it for 10 sec. Otherwise you'll have a puddle of plastic.

Umm aren't there a bunch of chemicals in plastic that are toxic and come out when heated?

Again, that's why it's only for 10 seconds.

Don't you put plastic tupperware in the microwave?

Perfectly fine.

I'd be more concerned about the leaching coming from the toothbrushes.

Plus, MythBusters did an episode on the germs on a toothbrush, and there's pretty much no way whatsoever to prevent junk from getting on them. The dentist or whatever specialist they had there didn't say it was a bad thing though. Sure, you might prevent yourself from getting a sickness, but if you start removing all bacteria from your life your body won't be as well prepared in the case something more serious comes along.

I'd stick with the Listerine or hydrogen peroxide (any tooth whitener usually contains Hydrogen Peroxide), as they don't involve a potential leaching of PVC junk from the plastics in the toothbrush, and they are designed specifically for removing bacteria.

My mum used to boil our toothbrushes every week. It was kind of weird. I just buy a new toothbrush every now and then.

I've put plastic tupperware in the microwave since I was a kid, and noth bad has happened to me, and I haven't gotten sick once.

How is it 'really bad'?
