or at least that's what she thought

Quote:
Jodi Wykle knew her son would be thrilled when she gave him a new Nintendo DS for his birthday.

Instead, he was rocked.

According to WTSP-TV, the confused teen opened up his gift only to find bunch of stones and a rolled up Chinese newspaper in place of the popular handheld.

All I got was a rock.

Needless to say, mom was equally stunned.

"When he opened it, he was pulling the seal off, my sister-in-law carries a pocket knife and she opened it and that's when he pulled it out and it was Chinese newspaper and a bunch of rocks," she explained.

The troubling discovery prompted the Florida woman to contact the local Wal-Mart where she bought the curious box and complain, but reportedly workers there told her it wasn't their problem and that she should contact Nintendo instead. Of course, Nintendo told her roughly the same thing, leaving mother and son with a $138 box of rocks.

"They don't want to do nothing. They want me to keep the box of rocks. I'm not buying a box of rocks for $138," she said.

Amazingly enough, however, Wal-Mart soon caved after learning that the same box of rocks had been previously returned by another disgruntled customer. How exactly it made it back onto store shelves remains a mystery, but for her troubles, Wykle was given a full refund and a $20 gift card.

It's not the first time Wal-Mart has gotten into hot water for selling a questionable handheld. Earlier this month, a PSP system bought at a diff

I was trying to think of ways that could have happened.
1. An employee is stealing them and replacing it, then selling it on the streets.
2. The Japanese are tired of cheap labor and screwing us over.
and good thing she got a refund + 20$.
they always say theres power in number.

I think he presumed Japanese because Nintendo are a Japanese company.

Wow, I would be baffled if I opened my DS and it was like that :o

My bet is on an employee. I doubt it would be someone at the factory but who knows.

It was returned to the store guys. And going by how they resold it as new clearly it was returned in it's original packaging, sealed and seemingly unopened.

Why open it up to check and then have to sell it second hand when you can just sell it new again? What happened was someone opened it being very careful not to rip the seal took the DS out and dumped rocks and newspaper in there to make it still feel the right weight. Then they returned it and got a refund.

If walmart wasn't so greedy this wouldn't be able to happen.

I'm not trying to suggest that Wal-Mart isn't a greedy corporation , but I'm guessing it was due to employee inaction that it got back on the shelf. If they took the time to look at all returned items, they might actually prevent things like this. But when you're a minimum wage worker, you couldn't really give a rat's *** if something like this happened.

Glad the lady got her money back. Can't believe they only gave her $20 for the misfortune.

As good as your theory sounds, there is one flaw.

On the back of the package there is a rectangular hole in the cardboard and in this hole is the bar code. The bar code sticker is stuck to the DS so how did they fake that?

Unless they used the newspaper so it would like like the bar code was there.

Can't answer that, not like you need the barcode to return it though..probably didn't even check.

I agree that walmart wouldn't need the actual Nintendo barcode to return it. Also, wouldn't walmart be able to check who the last person to buy this product then return it was?

I can't beleive Wal Mart just sent her back off again after she came back about it.

The PSP one is pretty funny as well though.
