I use a cannon for harder or longer tasks, like Fire Giants, Living Rock Creatures, or Black Dragons. I lose around 300k per task, but it halves the length of the task...
As for praying, I wouldn't recommend it unless you have enough spare cash to use piety... However it's a bit different with turmoil and soul split, as they have a slower drain time.
Personally I just put on a fighter torso and tassets, fill up my inventory with potions, and go at it.

If you want to raise your slayer level quickly - spend the money. You won't get high fast by being frugal. In the end you won't get anywhere without forking out millions for cannonballs and super restore pots. What you need to do is find a balance which you can afford, maybe don't do the black demons or dragons, maybe stick to easier tasks like bloodveld.
