Saw this in some newspaper today. It made me laugh to say the least:

Image

If you can't see it, it says:

Quote:
A Briton stole virtual characters after hacking into the internet's biggest free multiplayer game. The unidentified cyber criminal nabbed characters - which players spend years creating in the 'medieval universe' - from the online RuneScape game. The thief, from Avon, Somerset, was cautioned by police after being arrested last Tuesday by officers from the Central Police e-Crime Unit.
"Our first and only concern is protecting our player community as we know the high value players place on their unique accounts," said Mark Gerhard, chief executive of Jagex Games, which launched RuneScape in 2001. It now has 100 million active players.

Yeah so now if you get caught hacking, you might end up in some juvenile detention facility in the middle of nowhere. I was suprised this managed to reach legal status, and I also lol'd at how they typo'd RuneScape as RunScape.

A Kid asked Jesus, "How much do you love me?" and Jesus said. "This much." And spread his arms out on the cross and died. If you believe that he did this for you put this in your signature.

Meanwhile some poor guy had his credit card details stolen and in exchange got a rather large bill. I really don't think a runescape account is important enough for them to be wasting there time myself.

Doesn't matter what people are Hacking into...

Hacking is illegel from whatever you do with the other persons information, even if they just look at it is against the law, i mean Hacking hasn't got much different from stealing the consequences should still be the same... It's just one is physicalcally stealing and the other isn't. To me both should be treated with same respect.

Good thing no one on these forums hack..

So is someone changed someones password... This is punishible by law.. Even if the person willingly gave you the password? I mean if someone gave you the password. You have the right to change it.. So unless you actually "hack" the database you cant get into trouble

Wow and that's in Britain only? Interesting article, I wonder how many people have been arrested/been on newspaper because of an online game. :D

PS: Don't forget about your 99 attack, Ryan.

I'm thinking he didn't give them the password, but they guessed it. In which case, yes the guy should be punished.

I'd love to see scammers in jail.

-Hey punks, what have you done to end up here?
-I killed 100 people
-I robbed a bank
-I STOLE A RUNESCAPE ACCOUNT LOOOL!!

Would be funny as hell.

It's too much. Getting arrested for stealing a pixel character? I mean c'mon. You should try to catch pedophiles and mass murderers instead of a bunch of 40 year old virgin living in their mom's basement hacking runescape accounts. Sure hacking is bad, but not enough for punishement, espiecally when you're speaking of a game account. Hacking should be punishable only when you hack into gouvernement's or FBI's computers, you know what I mean...

If someone gives you the password to the account.. Or even hints at the password.. And you sucessfully logged into the account... You are not hacking.. Hacking is when you digatally mess with a server.. If you are password scamming and the noob is stupid enough to tell you the password.. They basically GAVE you the account.. Therefor your not hacking

It's almost the same thing as entering into someone else's house, but you have the key.
