Fishing, mining, and woodcutting have been known sense RSC as the "big three" for skills. Up until recently, they were almost even. Now, the mining graphics were updated, which many people didn't like. Also, with the release of the grand exchange, the prices shifted up, but only with fishing and woodcutting, leaving mining in the dust. Now, fishing and woodcutting are the two big skills that can be done AFK (away from keyboard).

They both have a method that earns money (yews and monkfish), one that is high level (sharks and magics) and one that is fast xp (fly fishing and willows). Woodcutting is more straightforward, because it requires no quests, and has yew trees on F2P. Meanwhile, fishing has monkfish, which requires an advanced quest (swan song, 100 qp, 66 magic, and 62 fishing + cooking), but is faster money and xp. While there are a lot of magic trees, you have to compete with other players over them, but sharks are individual.

Which of the two skills is easier to gain levels in? How about to make money? Which do you prefer?

Similar random events as well.

Fishing: River Troll
Woodcutting: Tree Spirit

Fishing: Whirlpool
Woodcutting: Ent

Fishing: Big Fish
Woodcutting: Axe heads used to fly off from time to time, however it has been removed.

Fishing spots move constantly. Trees get chopped down, however they never move.

You can wield an axe.

I'll say fishing is a bit harder.

I'm not sure about money making or speed, but woodcutting is my definite favorite.

I dislike both of them but would rather cut wood than fish any day.

Hmm.. I'd say fishing was easier for me, only because I had a lot of people to talk to and the spots didn't move very often. Woodcutting, when it's crowded it takes seconds before a magic tree goes down.

In terms of profit I'd go with woodcutting, simply because magic logs are around 1.2k and shark are less (unless they changed since last week :?).

I woodcut a lot nowadays for fletching levels and to see the usual people there. I'd take either one, really (99 in both).

don't forget you can wield a harpoon now or just use your arm as bait. you all know i'm a fisherman for many years and the only thing i'm sad about is that with the GE i can't do my shark drops anymore. i used to love as all the little boys and girls run around trying to get that shark. good old days

Fishing is more complex than Woodcutting.

For woodcutting, you need an axe. Fishing, there are several different kinds of equipment depending on what you plan on catching.

Mining really needs the dragon pickaxe. It was already slower than woodcutting and it was left even further behind since the dragon axe started cutting logs faster.

I prefer fishing as it usually requires just a little less attention than woodcutting. Also, trees and fishing spots can both be crowded, but you feel the effect of crowding more at trees than at fishing spots.

But what did such a Teuton afterwards look like when he had been "improved" and led into a monastery? Like a caricature of a human being, like an abortion: he had become a "sinner," he was in a cage, one had imprisoned him behind nothing but sheer terrifying concepts... There he lay now, sick, miserable, filled with ill-will towards himself; full of hatred for the impulses toward life, full of suspicion of all that was still strong and happy.
