So it was discovered(yesterday or today, I dunno) that there is a new miniquest along with a new weapon, the Shadow Sword.

So why didn't Jagex decide to tell us about this? I thought the point of updates was to draw in more players to subscribe, after all Runescape is a business.

I've been over this a few times, but I'll note it again. Jagex goal is to make money...that may be by advertisements or subscribers...Jagex can make just as much on advertisements as they make on subscribers...and visa versa. The goal is to run it like a bank. You want a constant flow with at least a slight growth of new players. You also want a fairly stable number of subscribers. Now the subscribers to stay the same...many leave after they get board...thus Jagex needs to fill those voids. But Jagex could also have too many members. If they choose to make the game to propriatary they could easily lose their huge free to play base from whom they draw so much of their future members. Also, if Jagex doesn't have enough free to play members they can't sell as much advertisement space...and people won't buy anyway because their comercial is being seen by less people. So the goal is to have a balenced number of members and nonmembers (mind you that does not mean the same amount...just two relatively stable ammounts with slight growth in both).

With all that said...why do you care? Whether you know something is to be released the day before the release or two weeks before...you can't do anything about it anyway till it actually is released.

Ok, I see your point on advertising in F2P.

But I'm not asking why they didn't tell us in advance about the new weapon, I'm talking about releasing new content without telling anyone that they released it.

How did you find out about this, if it wasn't announced?

Thanks Trekkie.

The sword's stats look pretty junky though.

I think jagex will keep adding secret updates. They make the game interesting.

It's like the Make-over mage sells Ying-Yang amulets when the post bag from the hedge came out with a letter to him mentioning the amulet.

Or of course the infamous ghostly robes.

I think its pretty stupid if they were to tell you everything about an update. They should continue not telling us about stuff and let the players figure it out.

I think that JAGeX is actually doing something different, for once. They don't want everything force-fed to you, because then it wouldn't be fun for you.

Oh, plus they'd lose money. :P

I was on a fansite last night and randomly noticed the Shadow Sword mini-quest guide. I'd not heard of it so was pretty suprised about it, but earlier today i got mine, and its nice to have something that not many other people seem to own :P
Its simply a visual thing though, isn't it, as its stats are pathetic.

I think it's a good job of jagex not to tell us, it would ruin the surprise

Why get a 99 quickly when you can enjoy the skill for a longer time and make a lot of money in the process?
