It shouldn't be an issue of Linux or not, though I'm guessing something else is amiss.
Have you been able to connect to the internet via whatever interface (LAN / Wireless) before with the computer + a linux distro, or is this the first time you've tried?
As Alex said, LAN should be online automatically. If it's wireless, make sure that the drivers are installed for the wi-fi adapter, and see if it's able to see any signals within its interface. If so, there shouldn't be any problems.. Just click to connect, provide a password if necessary.
