It's an analog input, so it won't have to detect it in order for the microphone to work. Does it say no microphone is on the system? Have you tried using it in Audacity or Skype?

I just did some research and realized my mic requires "Phantom Power" so i need a preamp and can't use that cable.
does anyone know a cheap preamp that can get from my mic to my comp?

I'd recommend sending it back and getting the USB version. The USB version takes phantom power from the USB port. It also has the added benefit of being digital right out of the mic ie. no potential for interference.

Of course if you're looking to start off a collection or do more advanced recording, I'd just get a basic 4 USB channel mixer.

PS: MXL 990 USB is what I use for doing the show.
