Runescape Lag - Just slow internet?

Hello. I have currently been experiencing some lag in Runescape that seems periodic...
I will go for about 10 minutes smoothly, then I will have 5 minutes of some very annoying glitching.
I am running Windows Vista with 4GB of RAM and a 256MB Video card. - All drivers updated.
I am using wireless internet, there is no way for me to get wired. Sorry.
I have installed all windows updates, and I still can't find out what the problem is.
Please help me?

If it runs fine for the first ten minutes I'd suspect that the problem is to do with some other process on your computer. Sometimes Windows (particularly Vista and perhaps 7) do some funny, often useless things in the background like search indexing (well, that can be handy) or updating your Windows Media Player library... or it could be some other program; for example virus scanners often don't care when you're busy and pop up at the most inconvenient of times.

Open up the task manager and switch to the processes tab, then sort by the CPU usage to see what's using your processor. Keep an eye on it while running Runescape and see if anything unusual appears.

What kind of lag do you experience? Does the screen skip around while you are trying to move, or do you stop moving for a while, then suddenly run to catch up to where you would be normally?

The first would suggest that it's your computer, something in the background as Chief already suggested. The latter would suggest a connection issue, either with your computer, your router, or your actual connection.

This is what I do to fix the lag but it sometimes makes other things lag.

Task manager > go to process > right click java > set priority > put it on above normal or high.

Firstly, it may be RuneScape. Try moving to another World, preferably one as geographically close to you, or the one with the lowest ping.

If this doesn't work, it's probably your PC. Restart your computer- there may be something running that's eating up your CPU. Again, falining this, open task manager (ctrl + shft + esc) and look in the processes tab for programs that are using a high amount of CPU (except Java and your browser). If you find something and can't identify it, post back and I'll have a go for you.

I stop moving, and then I catch up. And I checked my task manager and nothing out of the ordinary.
Also, it's not antivirus, I don't use antivirus. But I'm not an idiot and I don't go clicking and downloading everything I see. So I don't think I have a virus.

And I tried the High-Priority Java thing and it helped a little.

If you stop moving and catch up, it's probably a connection issue. I'd assume the connection problem is on your end, though if you switch worlds enough and it keeps happening, it is definitely on your end.

Try something like Pingtest.net and post the results. Your connection could be intermittent, which is why something that is real time has trouble functioning.

My ping is: 101 MS
My Jitter: 9 MS
Packet Loss: 0%
My ISP is Wide Open West
I did the test in Chicago. And I live in Evansville, IN.

From the small test, it doesn't look like it's your ISP. It got through with good timing, and no packet loss. Likely at this point, it's something on your internal network.

Are you on a wireless connection? How is the connection strength? Are there quite a few other people on your network when you experience these problems, or do they happen when you're alone?

I used to have these problems when I lived on campus and they filtered packets majorly. They kept thinking RS was something else (I assume) and I would always have issues trying to be online.

I am on a wireless connection. Its located in my home, I am the only other computer connected to it besides the desktop. And these problems happen ALL THE TIME. Including when I'm on at 3+ A.M. in the morning

so I don't think it's an issue of someone else using the bandwidth. The signal strength is usually 2-3 bars. My house isn't huge, but it above normal sized, and very "long". And my computer and the router happen to be on opposite sides of the house. I have a "Linksys Befw ~ some random numbers" by the way.

It runs all-around glitchy on the desktop because our desktop hasn't been updated with hardware for eight years. Integrated graphics card and 256MB of RAM. So I don't think it would be a good "control".

Hey just recent;y when Runescape was lagging alot I opened the task manager. It said CPU usage was at 100% and java was using 50-60 of it. Any ideas?

That's normal. Jagex has made it so that RuneScape looks pretty good now, and to accomplish this they need to make use of your computer's CPU and GPU. You'll be using quite a bit of that processor power if you want to keep playing games that are higher intensity.
