Hey guys, long time no see

According to ASUS Probe, my AMD CPU is heating at around 65-75 degrees Celsius at times.... This doesn't seem like a very good temperature tbh.

However, my computer has not restarted by itself due to overheating so far. I wonder what's wrong.

Is there any advice you would give me? Apply thermal paste or something?

I would hope you already have thermal paste on there, but if you don't, take a look at Arctic Silver 5.

If you don't have a decent cooling fan, I'd upgrade that if you are able.

First off what kind of CPU is it? They're all rated for different temperatures.

It's an AMD Athlon 64 3500+

Pretty old, I know.

I already have thermal paste but since the past 2 weeks it doesn't seem to be working? I might have to change it or something

Is that the idle temp or max temp?

According to this site, the max temp for an Athlan 64 is between 65 and 70.

Also I assume it's running at the standard clock frequency? Is the fan clear of debris and all?

Although all processors are different, 75 degrees isn't actually that hot, especially for an older processor which is likely to be a lot less efficient. If you are indeed outside the maximum temperature, your first concern should be your fans and vents.

Are the vents on the back (and possibly side and front as well) clear of dust? They don't take long to get clogged up. Is the fan clean? If it sound noisy, it's probably a sign that it's dirty and needs clearing out. If all else fails, the temperature sensors may just be wrong.

Are you having any noticeable problems? My computer, a Gateway LX6810 runs hot because the geniuses that designed it didn't put a case fan inside. Since, as everyone else said, it doesn't sound TOO hot, you might not want to put in too much time worrying about it.

The thing with the computer not restarting could be adjusted in your BIOS. You can choose at which temp your computer should restart at. As I'm at school right now I don't have time to check on stats on your cpu to see what temp it should be at, but you can always try to clean your fan or buy a new one. :)

Not all BIOS manufacturers let you alter things like that. I know my BIOS (amibios) won't let me change jack ******* fan speed. I guess there probably are some third-party apps out there that might be able to allow you to do that either way.

Have you checked to see if there are any BIOS updates for your computer's model? A lot of computer companies solve slight overheating problems by issuing a BIOS update that bumps up the speed of the fan. Give this a try if you haven't already. But seeing as though you haven't had any restarting problems and your computer is relatively old, how far do you want to go to fix this problem? If you really want..just install a better fan.

That temperature doesn't really seem that bad. If things start crashing, then I would consider it to be a problem.

Its not good to look at things that way. Lets try to avoid future hazards by fixing it today.
70ºC is considered quite a hottie. Not even a Pentium 4 with stock cooler/Max load would go so high.
