I just got back into playing this city builder/management sim called Dwarf Fortress. The idea behind the main gamemode is to carve a fortress out of a mountain, trade, fend of attackers, prevent your dwarves from going crazing and/or going on a killing spree. It's been in active development longer than almost every other game out there and is very complex. Oh, and did I mention it was free?

Here are some screenshots:

Don't let the graphics fool you, this is one of the deepest and most entertaining games I have ever played.
If you want to get into it, here is the main page and here is a very long but very useful guide.

I'm a little rapped up with Mass Effect at the moment, but I might come back and give this a try. If anything it'll certainly broaden my gaming horizons :)

I'll be honest. These days i can't be bothered to learn a game if i can't pick it up and play without the use of a guide it's not something I'll ever get invested in.

Used to be able to! Just not anymore.

Well I tried it out today. It's certainly is a game you won't be appreciate from moment one. It's a pretty steep learning curve, you need a pretty good in dept guide to even get started. In fact it's one of the most complex games I've seen so far. For example you already have like 50 professions. I bet it would be a lot better if the user interface was just slightly better. Even a mouse as input would improve a lot.

After "playing" for about 30 minutes I doubt I will ever learn to appreciate this game, but I don't have the time to invest just to see if I really like this game.

I actually gave up on this game last December and got back into it earlier this week. I don't know why I was able to pick it up a second time and start so easily though.

Someone has been making a game just as you described called Goblin Camp. The very first version just came out this month, but it lacks many of the basic features so it's more of a proof of concept.

there is another game inspired by this, called minecraft. the classic version is free and it's actually really cool.

Oh my goodness, that game looks complicated, and ugly. I would give it a try if I had more free time, but between working and SC2, I basically have no free time these days. :(

But what did such a Teuton afterwards look like when he had been "improved" and led into a monastery? Like a caricature of a human being, like an abortion: he had become a "sinner," he was in a cage, one had imprisoned him behind nothing but sheer terrifying concepts... There he lay now, sick, miserable, filled with ill-will towards himself; full of hatred for the impulses toward life, full of suspicion of all that was still strong and happy. In short, a "Christian"... - Twighlight of the Idols
