A return of the franchise--which hasn't been seen since Red Faction II launched on the PC in April of 2003--was first hinted at to investors in a conference call. Weeks later, a new Red Faction was then explicitly mentioned by management in a conference call. Months later, the publisher brought the project up again in a conference call.

Today, THQ CEO Brian Farrell brought up the new Red Faction in yet another conference call. The executive promised that more on the game would be shown in the coming weeks, but he did drop a few additional details today. Referring to it as "Red Faction III" for the first time, Farrell said it is being made by THQ's Volition Studios for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. As one would expect, it will bring back the series' hook of interactive environments, using the power of the new consoles and PCs to incorporate "more exciting destruction technology."

As for when gamers can expect to blast through Red Faction III, THQ is planning the game for its fiscal 2009, which runs from April 2008 through March 2009.

I am so pumped for Red Faction: Guerrilla. Imagine how insane the multiplayer would be.

I personally loved Red Faction I and II, because of the revolutionary Geo Mod system, allowing almost everything in the game to be blown up. In the multiplayer, players could blow holes in the walls and essentially make mines. Maps such was Warlord, which I will compare to Halo's Coagulation, just for reference, allowed players to make mines from one base to another, staging awesome attacks. Hopefully with the Xbox360`s memory, even more destruction can be allowed.

Really excited for this game.

I remember a few years back playing Red Faction 2 on my friends Xbox. I remember it being pretty chaotic with only 4 people, so I can imagine what it will be like with 16 (or 32?) people. I don't know much about the storyline but it sounds like it has to do with mining.

Speaking of mining, it sounds like mining in multiplayer would be pretty fun. Going from one base to the without the other knowing we be awesome. Imagine if the two met underground unexpected, wouldn't that be fun!

The first game was really mining based. The game started off on Mars, where people had gone to live because a scientist named Ultor had convinced them it was a Utopia. When they got there, they were forced into slavery in the mines, where many died. At the beginning, a resistance group called the "Red Faction" broke out of the mine, and set out to kill Ultor (or was it escape?).

In REII, Ultor (the company's name as well) scientists discovered some sort of energy on Mars and used it to create super soldiers. You play one of the super soldiers, who rebel against Ultor and team up with Red Faction to take him down.

Both really good games, story-wise.

How exactly does one "mine"? With some super advanced torch blowy up thing or a rune pick-axe?

Why you people even compare RF2 to RF1 i don't know. It was short, liner, far to easy, the story was lacking compared to RF1 and the multiplayer was the same as RF1 except the maps where worse and they changed a few things without cause that just made it worse compared to RF1.

RF2 was a disgrace and exactly why I'll be very skeptical with RF3. If it's like the first, yes please i want some of that. If it's like the second? The franchise might as well be dead to me.

You mined with Satchels (sticky grenades), remote explosives, frag grenades, and about 4 different rocket launchers.

Another interesting part of RF wad the second functions for every weapon. By pressin R2 with the Shotgun, you could shoot incindiary shots, causing the oponent to catch on fire. The NCIW was a machine gun with rockets as a second function, and the normal Rocket Launcher had a second function much like the Brute Shot (bouncy grenades).

You're making it out to be a piece of crap. It wasn't that bad... Sure, they toned down the Geo Mod far too much, but the story was still really good, and it was a fun game. I feel as if the multiplayer had been improved, and the multiplayer maps were better than the first. RFI is still my on my top 5 FPS list, RFII is not.

I'm really hoping that they keep up with the Geo Mod like they did in the first one, which is completely do-able on the 360. I have high hopes for it.
