The online involves you using your crew. You select a member of your crew to play online each match. Getting honors for them like being the top person on the winning team will give you an honor. I need 25 honors until i get the crew member i play with weapons license up. Once their license is up they can use level 1-3 weapons that you find in game. Online there are 4 diffrent game types, safe cracker, demolitions, team death match, and arsonist. In each of these game types you use your men to either crack safes, set demolitions, and set fires. The online play takes an extreme amount of gunfire to kill someone with. The quickest way to get a kill is closeup shotgun, 2 shots will get them on their knees where you can execute them for extra points.
Also to add upon what you said about having a good game or not the game is great. I think the only real reason it was rated so low was because of how unworthy it was to the movie. Unless you will follow Marlon Brando and Al Pacino to the grave you won't find that much unsatisfying about the game (except for some weak pick-up lines your main character tries to use on a stripper.)
