ImageThe Guide to HunterImage
By Agent Waffles \V/

ImageBrief OverviewImage

Hunter is the most independent skill in RuneScape as of yet. The basic idea being that you find and kill defenceless (most of the time) animals and use there bodies for clothing, ammunition or food. Hunter has practically no benefits apart from the weight reducing capes and the gloves of silence, as well as a wieldable harpoon so you can get that extra shark while fishing. Hunter is an incredibly easy skill and requires practically no tactics. However using that grey mass in your head you can level quicker than if you just used the highest possible item for your level. Hunter is quite fun, especially if you need to multi-task, you can just trap the little *******. It's the sort of thing you do when you are bored out of your mind....

Image

ImageLet’s Get StartedImage

To start the Hunter skill, you need to equip yourself properly, so wander down to your nearest Hunter store, located in Yanille and Nardah (how convenient). Bring about 10K and buy 5 of every trap, 1 poking stick, 1 noosing rod, 1 torch, 1 butterfly net and 10 butterfly jars. You are now well equipped to significantly reduce the fauna population in RuneScape.

ImageHunter LocationsImage

There are four main Hunter locations; Piscatoris, Relleka, Feldip Hills and Uzer. However the use of Uzer isn’t very common since you need waterskins, which take up inventory and waste time. There are also salamander areas in the; lv 20 Wilderness (black), Chaos Temple (red) and Mort Myre (green/swamp). On top of that there is also the Horned Graahk, near Cairn Isle on the west coast in southern Karamja.

ImageHunter EquipmentImage

Hunter essentials come from two shops in RuneScape currently, Nardah and Yanille as I have mentioned just a second ago. However for those of you with incredibly low attention spans; Yanille… Nardah… Yanille… Nardah… Are we clear? Let’s move on. There is also a shop in P2P part of Varrock that will turn your furs into the least fashionable clothing since snelms. However if you want to become a successful hunter, you must sacrifice your dignity and dress like the rest.

Image

Below is a table of the hunter equipment, levels, and victims (the creatures your hunting).

EquipmentLvl ReqVictim

Rabbit Snare27Rabbits
Box Trap27(Boxes?) Chinchompas and Ferrets
Teasing Stick37Lapuria, Graahk, Kyatt
Torch39Traps
Magic Box71Imps

ImageHunter ClothingImage

If you have strangled kebbits, ran them down at high speed or lured vicious beasts to their unfortunate demise you will notice that they drop fur, bring it to the Fancy Dress Shop in Varrock and he will convert it into camouflage, capes and gloves. Fur dropped by Pitfall animals works more effectively than kebbit fur, and when worn as a full set, you will get an additional boost. Please not that you cannot use Tatty fur to make headdresses.

ImageSetting TrapsImage

The maximum number of traps you can set is dependent on your level. You can however, only set one Deadfall at a time. If you are deadfalling, you may want to lay out other traps if you can.

Hunter LvlMaximum Traps
1-26One
27-39Two
40-59Three
60-79Four

ImageTrackingImage

One of the two starting points of Hunter, for this you only need a Noose Wand. You will never actually see tracking animals as they will always be hiding in miscellaneous scenery. To start this, equip your noosing wand and inspect the burrows. Tracks will appear to lead away from the burrow, now start poking close scenery nearby to find the next set of tracks. Once you get the message;

It looks like something is hiding in this <scenery>

Then you can attack the <scenery> and strangle the crazy kebbit. You will receive some fur, meat and bones. The fur can be used to make camouflage in the specific area you received it from.

ImageBird SnaringImage

Hooray, more slaughter. This is for the less active, as you do not actually have to concentrate. Therefore it is significantly more popular; however the rewards are no where near as helpful. To snare birds you must lay your traps within the flying range of the birds, otherwise you have as much chancing of catching one as you do of getting Durial unbanned. The traps will not always catch on. And you will have to reset it. If it stands for too long without a bird getting to it then it will fall over. Bird snares can be smoked and being in Camo will increase your chances. The maximum number of traps you can lay is dependent on your hunter level.
All birds drop bones, bird meat and feathers which can be used for fletching. However Tropical Wagtails give stripy feathers used for fishing rainbow fish.

ImageButterfly CatchingImage

Sounds cute, doesn’t it? This is incredibly simple. Wield your butterfly net, have empty butterfly jars in your inventory and run around like a madman taking ferocious swipes. Your success will increase with your Hunter level. Butterflies can be used on friends in a multi-combat zone, however you will probably never see anyone ever doing this.
Warning: Your Nerd level may unexpectedly rise if you attempt to catch butterflies.

Butterflies are supposedly magical creatures. However they will not use their magical powers on the selfish adventurer. You can use the butterflies on other players in a mulit-combat zone. The butterfly's affect depends on it's type. Butterflies can also be released on right click if you feel the need to catch more.

Sapphire Glacialis25Temporarily Boosts Defence
Snowy Knight35Restores Hitpoints

ImageDeadfallImage

After skipping around like a nancy boy, trying to catch butterflies, it is times to do something more sinister. Enter Dead-falling. The basic idea is that you prop up boulders in the hope that an unfortunate kebbit will wonder underneath and get them killed by half a tonne of rock. Simply click the set trap on a boulder while you have any form of knife and logs in your inventory and you will drop up a boulder and wait for one to come under. Being camouflaged will help. You can also smoke these traps and set them with bait as seen in the table below.

ImageBox TrappingImage

It’s time to engage in the art of trapping the elusive box, however that information is classified. Instead this section will tell you how to trap with a box, and since the master hunters themselves have already caught boxes for you, and they are already tame, then the hard work is done for you. Boxes can only trap Ferrets and two varieties of chinchompas, you set the box up, and the box will wait until a ferret comes within range, swallow it whole. Box traps can be smoked and baited, however the bait is difficult to get an not recommended. To add to that, being camouflaged will also help you.

CreatureLvl ReqExpLocationBait
Ferret27115PiscatorisRaw Meat
Chinchompa53198PiscatorisSpiced Chopped Tomatoes
Red Chinchompa63265FeldipSpiced Minced Meat

Ferrets are used in rabbit snaring, the idea being that you send the ferret down the rabbit hole, and the rabbits will come sprinting out into your perfectly laid trap and pretty much commit suicide due to there own severe lack of mental capacity.

Chinchompas can be used as explosives. The idea being that you throw them at then enemy at high speed, and they explode causing owies. To learn more about Chinchompas, please refer to a ranged guide.

ImageRabbit SnaringImage

It’s time to kill some cute fluffy bunnies, don’t we all love pointless massacre? You can only start rabbit snaring after you have completed Eagle’s Peak as you need a ferret. There are two burrow formations within Piscatoris, you must set the traps in line with the burrows, after that is done, Flush the burrow by right clicking it while you have a ferret in your inventory. The rabbits go psycho so you may not always get the kill.Rabbits drop a rabbits foot, which can be strung with a ball of wool with 37 crafting, it will increase your chances (significantly) of receiving a nest from trees while woodcutting. The best way to trap rabbits is to get the traps so it lines up with as many traps as possible, the highlighted squares demonstrate the best locations to set up a trap.

ImageNet TrappingImage

It’s time to become slightly cliché, and launch your victim high into the air while they hang around until you come back. The idea being is that you stretch sapling back to breaking point and then attach ropes to it, secures the ropes to a net and pin the entire thing down with a simple mechanism. This means that you will need rope and netting for each trap, the nets can be purchased from any fishing equipment shop. Net traps can be smoked and baited, but Camo won’t work, since Salamanders and Swamp Lizards linger in different areas to most other Hunter prey, with the exception of orange salamanders, in which case you should wear Graahk or Desert Camo.

Image

CreatureLvl ReqExpBait
Swamp Lizard29152Guam Tar
Orange Salamander47224Marrentil Tar
Red Salamander59272Tarromin Tar
Black Salamander67304Harralander Tar

You keep what you catch here, you can wield Lizards and Salamanders as weapons. They require ammunition which is also their bait, they are Melee, Ranged and Mage. However they aren’t particularly strong, but on the plus side they make a good all rounder for the Dagganoth Mother and other such things.

Please refer to a Ranged guide for more information.

ImagePitfall trapsImage

It’s time to get your hands on some real, slightly more (or less) fashionable camo. Pitfall is actually incredibly easy. All you have to do is set up two traps, and jump across them until the beastie falls down and dies. To set up a pitfall you must have a knife and logs, this also means that you may want to bring an axe along to fell some trees as well. You will also need a teasing stick, the idea being that you poke the animal so it attempts you rip your head off. Jump over the traps until he/she falls down, they will not jump over the same trap twice so construct them strategically. The animal will drop hides, these can be used to make a better version of camo than what you probably currently have. As usual, take them to Fancy Pants in Varrock.

ImageFalconryImage

In North-Eastern Piscatoris lies the Falconry area. Here you may borrow Falcons from Matthias for 500gp; you will need your hands free for this (no gloves, weapons or shields). Once you have paid up then you will have the Falcon for as long as you want while inside the Falconry area. While the bird rests on your arm, click the Kebbits and the Falcon will nail the poor bugger. Go retrieve it; you will get some fur and bones. The fur will come in handy later. Bury the bones and continue.

ImageMagical Imp BoxesImage

Haven’t you ever dreamed of enslaving a race for your command, well it starts here. At 71 Hunter you can successfully capture Imps and make them carry items to your bank. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind that granite body of yours, can’t be that heavy can it? Anyways, the Imps boxes are practically a psychedelic adventure, Imps can’t afford to go to Las Vegas so this is the best they will get in there miserable lives of being killed off by lv 6s with Bronze Meds and iron maces.

Image

You can have more than one of the unfortunate little ******* in your inventory at one time, so that is a maximum of 56 items (drop two so you can actually give them items, rather than sending each other). After they have delivered two items they are free. They can send items separately or together, it doesn’t matter.

CreatureLvl ReqExpLocation
Imp71450Almost anywhere

Additional Features

ImageThe Hunters’ CrossbowImage

Well it’s time we got a Crossbow that wasn’t so pathetic they are rarer than party hats. The Hunters’ Crossbow is a fair chunk faster than regular crossbows, and with 49 Hunter you can get bolts as good as rune for 1/20 of the price. Hunters’ Crossbows cost 1,300gp from Leon who hangs around the Hunter store.

Image

The Hunter crossbow has a speed of 5, ranged bonus of +55 and requires 50 ranged to use it. I personally recommend it if you have a few kebbit spikes hanging around from training Hunter.

ImageSalamandersImage

RuneScape's first flamethrower, this is a diverse animal, as it is Ranged, Magic and Melee. They use ammunition which is also their bait. Please refer to a Ranged guide for more information.

Image

ImageEagle TransportationImage

Once you have finished Eagles' Peak. You can go from Eagles' Peak to any of the other major Hunter locations. However, you must go to Feldip and put a Teasing stick on the small vine, so it will grow and reach the eagles. And you must also push a boulder out of the exit to reach Uzer. The boulder must be pushed from the outside. To use the eagles, use a rope with them. If you are going from Eagles' Peak to anywhere else, you will see a short cinematic.

Dr Doom, please only post here if you have an addition to the guide itself. This area is only used for getting guides online on the mainsite.

Example of an addition:

You might want to add what method you should use for training it up fast. I mean you can travel from the polar area to the Jungle area because there's the monster you just learned to hunt down. But it might be so incredibly slow. Take for example pitfalls. They're quite a lot of experience you get for each catch but it might take ages for them to actually fall into it.

That drawing that you posted scares me a little...

But as for the leveling guide, I'll post what I did(after asking many high leveled hunters)

Always using the maximum # of traps, and wearing camo.

1-9 = Crimson Swifts(Jungle)
9-19 = Copper Longtails(Woodland)
19-29 = Tropical Wagtails(Jungle)
29-59 = Swamp Lizards(Swamp, No Bait, No Torching) + Orange Salamanders(Dessert, No Bait, No Torching)
59-63 = Red Salamanders(Lava, No Bait, No Torching)
63-67 = Red Chinchompas(Jungle)
67+ = Red Chinchompas(Jungle) + Black Salamanders(Lava)

Some people said Falconry was good exp, but in my experience, Swamp Lizards are much better till 59.

Thank you August. At least I don't spend my time getting levels to try make my friends envious, using money I hacked over the last three years inspite of several warnings.
